🛫 Meet Sydney Thomas, TOCA’s Inaugural Catalyst Honoree!🛫

What does it mean to be a catalyst?
At Teens of Color Abroad, we believe it means using your leadership, relationships, and influence to create opportunities that might not otherwise exist—and helping others see possibilities beyond what they thought was possible.

That is exactly what Sydney Blake Thomas represents.

As Director of Brand Marketing at Beis Sydney builds brands at the intersection of product, culture, and community, leading strategy across partnerships, product marketing, consumer strategy, PR, executive visibility, and experiential. Her career has spanned public relations, creative strategy, and brand marketing, earning recognition as a Forbes 30 Under 30 honoree for Marketing & Advertising.

But we are especially proud to celebrate Sydney for the leadership she brings to TOCA as a member of our Board of Directors. Sydney understands that access to new experiences can be transformative. She believes in putting people and community at the center of the work—and she brings that same spirit to TOCA’s mission to help teens of color travel, explore, and expand their vision of what is possible.

As our inaugural Catalyst Honoree, Sydney represents the kind of leadership we hope to celebrate for years to come: visionary, community-centered, and committed to creating pathways for others to thrive.

Please join us in celebrating Sydney at the TOCA First Annual Benefit on October 8 in New York City.

“First time letting him go away for this long, and (our) expectations were beyond met. Communication is always key, and having the families involved makes all the difference. You guys did a wonderful job. Growth is the key to success in life, and this helped him grow."

👥 It takes a community to help students see the world, and our school partners play a HUGE role! 👥

We are proud to work with schools and programs that share this vision, including Ascend Schools, SEO Scholars - New York City, KIPP NYC, Coney Island Prep, The Opportunity Network, NewComm Project., and Cristo Rey Brooklyn. Through their trust and support, students gain access to transformative study abroad experiences that go beyond the classroom.

Our students don’t just travel- they grow, they discover, and they come back seeing the world (and themselves) in a whole new way.

TOCA is endlessly grateful for your partnership and we look forward to continuing to build bridges together.

Here’s to more passports stamped, more languages learned, and more students stepping boldly into the world!

✨ TOCA Board Member Highlight: Esayas Wureta✨

Meet Esayas Wureta- a change agent, strategic business leader, Head of Inclusion, Belonging, and Community Impact at CSAA Insurance Group, a AAA Insurer, and a proud TOCA Board Member!

“I support TOCA because travel has a unique way of expanding how we see the world and ourselves. Experiencing different cultures reminds us that there are many ways to live, lead, and move through life, and there is something powerful about stepping outside of what feels familiar. When everything around you is different, it forces you to be fully present, curious, and open in ways everyday life often doesn’t. I’m proud to serve as a board member because TOCA creates experiences that build intercultural understanding, broaden perspectives, and help young people see both the world — and their place within it — in a bigger way.” 🌍

This past spring, we launched TOCA Online: Classroom to Classroom, a virtual Spanish-English language learning and cultural exchange experience connecting middle school students in the United States and Argentina.

We partnered with South Bronx Early College Academy (Bronx, NY) and Children's School Boston College (Buenos Aires, Argentina).

Through the program, students had the opportunity to:

🗣️ Practice Spanish and English in authentic conversations
🌎 Learn about each other’s cultures and daily lives
🤝 Build meaningful friendships across borders

Over the course of the program, students participated in:

💻 4 live virtual exchange sessions
👥 Small-group breakout conversations on topics such as food, music, games, hobbies, daily life, and more
🌟 Interactive Kahoot! activities before each session

Here’s what students had to say about their experience:

💭 “The groups were effective because you could speak more easily and be more comfy…I’m thinking of studying abroad and travelling the world with my friends…My marks in English improved (especially the speaking part) and I feel more calm when talking to my American friends.”
- Tomás, Children's School Boston College Student

💭 “I like the TOCA program because it allows you to connect with many different languages and many different people and you can learn a lot from it.”
- Zahara, South Bronx Early College Academy Student

A huge thank you to our incredible school partners, educators, and students for making this program such a success. We’re excited to continue creating opportunities for young people to connect and learn from one another across cultures.

✨ TOCA Board Member Highlight: Martine Charles✨

Meet Martine Charles, a Senior Sales Enablement & Leadership Development Manager at Uber, the Program Director for our TOCA Mentorship Program, and a proud TOCA Board Member!

“When I was in high school, I began thinking more seriously about my future, and I realized that the dreams my parents had for me were not always the same dreams I had for myself. In 11th grade, a college recruiter named Ms. Mona, who came from a similar background to mine, visited my English class and shared stories about traveling the world, meeting people from different backgrounds, and building a meaningful career along the way. After her presentation, I asked her how to build my own path, and she simply told me, “Just try to do something, and you’ll figure it out along the way.”

That philosophy has stayed with me ever since. Looking back, it’s incredible to think that a simple 45-minute presentation on a warm spring afternoon could completely shift the way I saw my future. Since then, I’ve built a career that is uniquely my own and have had the opportunity to travel to over 20 countries.

Being a Board Member and Mentorship Program Director at TOCA allows me to pass that same gift forward. One of the [TOCA] students once told me they saw me as a role model, and I nearly burst into tears because I realized how powerful it is for young people to see someone who reminds them that more is possible. To me, TOCA is about exposure, confidence, and helping students believe they can create a future beyond what they’ve already seen.” 🌍
