It’s pretty special when someone wants to volunteer their time … and it’s truly extraordinary when someone volunteers 💯 times!

Tonight we celebrated Anna-Mari Raunio - Anna-Mari Raunio - and her flower rescuing centenary 💐

As one of her fellow volunteers and board members said “Most people hope to do good when life allows it. You create space for it. You are a star I look up to!”

Thank you, Anna-Mari, for your humor and service, for inspiring us all to contribute to the communities and causes we care about ❤️ and, of course, for sorting through plenty of moldy flowers 🥀

When society often forgets you, it feels so special to be remembered, and chosen.

Each flower we rescue and donate is a gesture of this care and connection; and our Kukkia Kaikille workshops in particular bring the beauty and joy of flowers to our elders.

Hosted by care homes, community centers and neighborhood associations (around Helsinki and now throughout Finland) these workshops are a platform for personal well-being, meaningful connections and societal engagement.

We meet most Mondays and every Thursday near Teurastamo to sort the hävikki flowers we’ve collected, composting those which are moldy or too damaged to save and rescuing the rest.

Sometimes we make bouquets to donate; otherwise we just prepare the flowers to be sent out loose for workshops. But as a volunteer you’ll almost always get to make a little bouquet for yourself, or to share with a friend 💐

No flower experience is necessary, and this volunteer activity is kid-friendly! We generally stand while we clean and sort the flowers, but our space can accommodate a variety of access/mobility scenarios, let us know how we can best welcome you.

And we usually host these evenings in English, conversation among the volunteers is a mix of Finnish and English. If English is uncomfortable for you, let us know and we’ll tell you the next day that our Finnish-speaking host will be there 🇬🇧 🇫🇮

☀️Who knew how dazzling an amaryllis would be in the March sunlight??!☀️

Our team member Chris rescued some potted amaryllis after Christmas and has been holding onto them for a few months - now we see why 🤩

📣 Our March volunteer calendar is up!

Join us on a Monday or Thursday evening to clean and sort the rescue flowers and prep them to be donated to care homes and charities around the Helsinki metro area 💛

Sometimes we just prep the flowers and sometimes we make bouquets to donate 💐

Next Wednesday (14.1) drop in to make a bouquet with us!

From 16:30-18 we’ll be at the Helsingin Kahvipaahtimo cafe in Teurastamo - join us to help transform some rescued flowers into beautiful bouquets 💐
The next day we will deliver the bouquets to bring cheer to residents at Hämeenkylän vanhustenkeskus and Myyrinkoti.

No need to rsvp and we will teach you what you need to know. Friends and kids welcome 😁

Flower rescuers, what a year 2025 was! We rescued 55% more flowers than last year (100,200 in 2025, up from 65,000 in 2024!) and served twice as many participants through our Kukkia Kaikille program (1484 in 2024, 2988 in 2025!) 💐

We couldn’t do this without all of YOU, especially our flower rescuing volunteers (including the 155 newbies who came this year); our 15 kukkakeiju who help with Kukkia Kaikille workshops; and our bouquet event attendees (over 800 of you!).

Nor could we do it without the incredible, caring people at our partner organizations - 41 care homes, shelters and community organizations in 6 cities. These partners are using the rescued flowers to boost well-being bring joy to people who might not otherwise get to enjoy flowers.

We are so grateful to our funders - STEA and the City of Helsinki.
