Enterprise Partners

Enterprise Partners EP Throughout and across the board, EP focuses on the Women’s Economic Empowerment and Green Growth potentials.

Enterprise Partners (EP) is a social enterprise established in 2013 to facilitate markets development in order to create jobs and raise incomes of Ethiopians living with poverty, particularly women.

EP’s interventions are guided by a unique philosophy, namely Making Markets Work for the Poor (M4P), which focuses on:
- Considering the needs of the poor at the outset of any activity;
- A market-oriented outlook to encourage competition and avoid protection of inefficient industries;
- Bring system-wide and sustainable change by addressing whatsoever “binding” constraints – regulatory constraints or market failures – combining policy and institutional measures;
- Facilitate private sector investment and innovation, subsequently crowding in market actors. HOW WE WORK
EP facilitates market development in four sectors, namely Cotton-Textile-Apparel (CTA), Livestock & Leather (LAL), Fruits & Vegetables (FAV), and Access to Finance (A2F). Driven by M4P approach, EP emphasises on:
- Resolving Market Failures – through diagnosing markets (goods, services, and labour) that are not working for the poor and identifying those feasible to intervene in places where the poor are either sellers, buyers, or employees along the transaction chain;
- Facilitation – to influence markets positively by working through partners, where EP provides innovative solutions and grants to market actors to de-risk innovation/change with the aim of catalysing further investments in proven and bankable enterprises. For this end, EP is undertaking various interventions that are focused on enhancing the productivity and competitiveness of market actors in three Agro-Industrial Sectors while improving the performance of the Financial Sector. We do this by tackling key constraints to growth, which result from both limited access to finance as well as market failures and regulatory issues in key and priority industries. WHAT WE AIM TO ACHIEVE
Economic growth is desperately needed in Ethiopia to create jobs and raise income. Ethiopia’s private sector has a crucial role to fulfil this objective by boosting investment and spurring productivity through innovation. Through our concerted intervention programme – that uses grant fund in combination with technical assistance – by the end of 2020, EP expects to:
- Leverage the creation of 45,000 jobs, of which 75% will be for women;
- Raise the incomes of 65,000 households by at least 20%;
- Leverage the creation of 350,000 new micro-savers.
