The 14th Amendment has been a cornerstone of U.S. democracy since 1868, guaranteeing birthright citizenship, equal protection under the law, due process, and fair representation.
Prof. Joyce Mushaben will look at how recent executive orders could affect those protections, especially for women and marginalized communities. Using the idea of the “canary in the coal mine,” she’ll explore whether attacks on the rights of marginalized groups may be an early warning sign of broader threats to democracy in the United States.
