(1)

We support talented researchers at all stages of their careers, stimulate the exchange of scientific information, and help build a research environment where scientists can achieve their best work. We support talented researchers, selected through impartial evaluation processes, so that they can go on to do great science with the creativity and passion to answer the unanswered. We provide platform

s for scientific exchange and training in cutting-edge technologies so that the high standards of excellence in research practice are maintained. The wide scientific scope across the full range of life science research coupled with the broad geographical reach of our 1500 members and associate members – some of the best researchers in Europe and around the world – positions us to optimally serve Europe’s life science community.

The EMBO Policy Team is pleased to share our contribution to the DORA blog, highlighting key insights from EMBO’s 2026 workshop on .

Bringing together representatives from across EMBO’s funding programmes, the workshop provided an opportunity to explore how research excellence can be assessed in ways that better reflect the realities of contemporary .

Our approach forms part of EMBO’s ongoing commitment to responsible research assessment and aligns with the principles of DORA and CoARA - Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment. By engaging researchers directly in discussions about assessment practices, EMBO aims to help ensure that evaluation processes are transparent, fair and meaningful, while continuing to support excellence in the .

We are particularly grateful to the researchers across EMBO's funding programmes who contributed their perspectives and experiences to these discussions. Their engagement helped shape a constructive exchange on the future of research assessment.

Many thanks to DORA for the opportunity to contribute and for continuing to foster these important conversations.
