Indonesia promised to stop clearing forests for agriculture. In Papua, our partners say the bulldozers keep coming.

At the International Sustainability Forum in Jakarta, the announcement drew applause and favorable headlines. Solidaritas Merauke sees a different reality: forests cleared for plantations, Indigenous rights ignored and communities facing criminalization and violence.

The test is not how a pledge sounds. It is whether destructive projects stop, cleared areas are restored and Indigenous people regain their rights.

: On the shores of Lake Victoria, a small forest held its ground. Kitubulu – 80 hectares, quietly filtering water, sheltering wildlife – was weeks away from bulldozers. Then our partner FEM EARTH intervened.

A dusty forest road in Cross River State. A community‑approved checkpoint built to stop illegal logging. Then the police arrive. Our Nigerian partner Odey Oyama and his team are arrested and falsely accused of “conspiracy” and “inciting conflict between local communities”.
