Dramatisch ist nicht nur die neue Opernale „Hauptsache Gesund!? – Teil 3: Umwelt“, sondern auch der Zustand des Horster Moores:

✔️ Seit Jahrzehnten abgetorft & entwässert
✔️ Ausgetrocknet durch Klimakrise & großflächiges Trockenlegen der Umgebung
✔️ Fast zugewachsen mit Birken –moortypische Pflanzen wie Wollgras, Rauschbeeren, Sumpfporst gibt es noch

💡 Wie könnte das Moor gerettet werden?
→ Vernässung, auch in der Umgebung
→ naher Nadelwald in Laubwald umwandeln

🎤 Und was sagt die Opernale dazu?
Ab Mitte September erlebt ihr die Antworten beim Stationentheater direkt im Moor! 🎶🌍

A new era for Europe’s peatlands begins today: At in ’s-Hertogenbosch, the European Peatlands Initiative (EPI) officially launched. An important milestone for peatland conservation, restoration and sustainable management across Europe!

🌱 BIG NEWS FOR EUROPE’S PEATLANDS! 🌍

Today, at the Conference , the European Peatlands Initiative officially launches. 🎉

Why does it matter?

Peatlands may cover only a small part of our planet, but healthy peatlands can:

🌍 store vast amounts of carbon
💧 support cleaner water
🦋 provide habitats for unique biodiversity
🌧️ help regulate floods and droughts
🤝 support sustainable livelihoods

And peatlands don’t stop at national borders.

Neither should our efforts to protect them.

The European Peatlands Initiative brings together governments, researchers, NGOs, landowners, farmers, businesses and other organisations to turn shared ambition into coordinated action across Europe.

But today isn’t only about launching an initiative.

It’s an invitation to build it together. 💚

📢 Organisations can now apply to become EPI members.

💬 Individuals can join the EPI Community Platform and connect with peatland practitioners across Europe.

How it could be? Fentastic in future, as in this little dragonfly’s summer tale about life in peatlands: 🐉
Born in this wet fen I love to dash around the lush green reeds and typha. 🌿 There, I meet my friends, the grasshoppers and damselflies. 🦗 I see the aquatic warbler, which once had been nearly extinct, and water buffaloes munching in joy. 🐃

Sunlight is glittering on the clear water. ☀️ Despite the heat the air is pleasant through the peatland’s gentle, cooling effect. It’s wet soil stores carbon in the ground. 🌍 The Paris agreement has been overachieved, huge emissions from peatland soils are a thing of the past - degradation and subsidence, too.

Flying over the small community nearby I see the people at the paludi-festival, all dressed in brilliant paludi-clothing, relishing community grown paludi-food. 🍽️ In everyday life they educate their children to cherish their wet environment.

They invest in palu-shares from peat associations and have replaced fossil materials with renewables from peatlands for houses or furniture. 🏡 You can get that at “Paludikea”, my parents say.

Have to finish – there’s Beya. Don’t tell, but her mosaic jewelled eyes captivate me. 🪲 Want to live with her ever after in these wet peatlands. 💚 And why shouldn’t we?
