Er gründete die gemeinnützige und operativ arbeitende Stiftung mit dem Preisgeld des ihm verliehenen Right Livelihood Awards. Die Succow Stiftung ist eine weltweit vernetzte und anerkannte Naturschutzinstitution. Während sie sich anfangs auf die Länder des postsowjetischen Raumes konzentrierte und bei der Entwicklung von Welterbegebieten, Nationalparks und Biosphärenreservate unterstützte, weitete sie ihr Wirken bald auf mehrere Kontinente aus. Heute setzen sich knapp 30 Mitarbeitende für den Schutz und die nachhaltige Nutzung der Ökosysteme unserer Erde ein. Schwerpunkte in der Stiftungsarbeit sind die Bereiche Moor und Klima, Schutzgebiete und Biosphäre, Naturerbe und Landnutzung sowie Forschung und Weiterbildung. Zum Schutz der Natur folgt die Stiftung dabei dem Dreiklang Erhalten, Haushalten und Werthalten und weist damit dem Erhalt der Funktionstüchtigkeit der Ökosysteme höchste Priorität zu. We are certain that our peatlands must be wet and our forests close to nature. We are committed to nature-friendly land use that regenerates ecosystems and protects biodiversity. And it is also precisely for this reason that we are campaigning for protected areas and biosphere reserves to be established not only nationally, but worldwide. Dr. Michael Succow founded the non-profit and operational foundation with the prize money from the Right Livelihood Award he received. The Succow Foundation is a globally networked and recognised nature conservation institution. While it initially concentrated on the countries of the post-Soviet region and supported the development of world heritage sites, national parks and biosphere reserves, it soon expanded its work to several continents. Today, almost 30 staff members are committed to the protection and sustainable use of our planet's ecosystems. The Foundation's work focuses on peatlands and climate, protected areas and the biosphere, natural heritage and land use, as well as research and education. To protect nature, the Foundation follows the triad of conservation, stewardship and value and thus assigns the highest priority to preserving the functionality of ecosystems.
