Today, at the Conference , the European Peatlands Initiative officially launches. 🎉

Why does it matter?

Peatlands may cover only a small part of our planet, but healthy peatlands can:

🌍 store vast amounts of carbon
💧 support cleaner water
🦋 provide habitats for unique biodiversity
🌧️ help regulate floods and droughts
🤝 support sustainable livelihoods

And peatlands don’t stop at national borders.

Neither should our efforts to protect them.

The European Peatlands Initiative brings together governments, researchers, NGOs, landowners, farmers, businesses and other organisations to turn shared ambition into coordinated action across Europe.

But today isn’t only about launching an initiative.

It’s an invitation to build it together. 💚

💬 Individuals can join the EPI Community Platform and connect with peatland practitioners across Europe.

Restoring Land. Restoring Hope. 🌿

At UNCCD COP17, the Michael Succow Foundation hosted a side event on the protection of Mongolia’s last intact desert and steppe ecosystems and the UNESCO World Heritage nominations “Mongolian Gobi” and “Eastern Mongolian Steppes.”

More than 70 participants joined the discussion, including representatives of international organisations and local communities from Mongolia.

The event also addressed concerns about mining licences and a potentially planned transport corridor near the Great Gobi A Strictly Protected Area.

Das Succow & Knapp Seminar 2026 ist zu Ende. Doch die Succownauten bleiben unterwegs. 🌱

Eine Woche lang waren rund 65 junge Menschen in Thüringen unterwegs mit vielen besonderen Naturerlebnissen, inspirierenden Gästen und intensiven Gesprächen. Aber das eigentliche Highlight? Das Netzwerk, das dabei entsteht und über die Seminarwoche hinaus weiterwirkt.

Kraniche, Küstenmoor & Wind im Haar. 🐦🌾

Raus aus dem Alltag, rein in die Weite der Karrendorfer Wiesen! Vor den Toren Greifswalds liegt ein besonderer Lebensraum, den es zu entdecken gibt.

Bei unseren geführten Exkursionen geht’s zu Fuß durch das Salzgrasland, vorbei an Wasserflächen und hinaus in die Weite der Wiesen. Dabei gibt es jede Menge zu entdecken und mit etwas Glück sind auch die ersten Kraniche zu hören oder zu sehen. 🐦

Hurra, der TÜV war da! 🥳🌿

Unser neuer Naturspielplatz im Naturschutzgebiet Lanken ist fertig und jetzt wollen wir ihn endlich mit euch ausprobieren!

Am Samstag, 29. August, von 14 bis etwa 16 Uhr heißt es: klettern, spielen, Abenteuer erleben und Natur entdecken. 🌳🪵🌊

Am Rand des knorrigen Küstenwaldes, direkt neben Naturstrand und Waldwildnis, wartet unser neues Spielparadies auf kleine und große Besucher*innen. Und ein gutmütiges Seeungeheuer freut sich ganz besonders auf seinen ersten großen Einsatz. 🐉

Das Besondere: Für den Spielplatz am Strandbad Ludwigsburg wurde Holz aus dem Lankener Wald verwendet. Dort wurden im vergangenen Jahr nicht heimische Nadelbäume gefällt, damit heimische und standortangepasste Bäume wieder mehr Licht und Platz zum Wachsen bekommen. 🌲➡️🌳

☕🍰 Kaffee und Kuchen gibt’s auch!

🌏 Protect what cannot be replaced. Join our side event at COP17 in Ulaanbaatar.

Protecting the last remaining pristine desert and steppe ecosystems: What happens when some of the last large-scale intact desert and steppe ecosystems receive international recognition and protection?

At in Ulaanbaatar, the Michael Succow Foundation will host a side event exploring how UNESCO World Heritage nominations can support the long-term conservation of these globally significant landscapes.

The focus will be on two major nominations from Mongolia:
🏜️ The Mongolian Gobi – a diverse desert ecosystem with unique oasis habitats, endangered species, geological features and important climate archives.
🌾 The Eastern Mongolian Steppes – among the last remaining large-scale temperate grasslands, supporting exceptional biodiversity and vast migratory wildlife populations.

The side event will also highlight the importance of collaboration between civil society, governmental institutions and international conservation organisations.

For us, World Heritage is not only about recognition. It can help mobilise international cooperation, strengthen conservation efforts and create long-term commitments to protecting outstanding natural landscapes.

🌍 Moore vs. Wälder: Wer speichert mehr Kohlenstoff?

Moore machen gerade einmal 3 % der weltweiten Landfläche aus. Wälder bedecken rund 30 %.

Und trotzdem steckt in den Torfen der Moore fast doppelt so viel Kohlenstoff wie in der gesamten oberirdischen Biomasse aller Wälder der Erde. 🤯🌱

Der Haken: Das funktioniert nur, solange Moore nass und intakt sind. Werden sie für Landwirtschaft oder Torfabbau entwässert, können sie vom Kohlenstoffspeicher zur Treibhausgasquelle werden.

Die gute Nachricht: Viele trockengelegte Moore lassen sich wiedervernässen und anschließend mit Paludikultur nachhaltig nutzen. So können Klimaschutz, Naturschutz und regionale Wertschöpfung zusammengehen. 💚
