UiO - RITMO Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies in Rhythm, Time and Motion & UiO - Institutt for musikkvitenskap Universitetet i Oslo (UiO) will host the European Hiphop Studies Network’s 10th annual meeting, June 7-9th, 2027.

We are hyped to invite scholars, practitioners, enthusiasts – anyone really – to come celebrate with us in Oslo. The conference aims to investigate the aesthetics of hip hop art and related cultural expressions, particularly as they operate "in the breaks." Abstracts due by December 1st, 2026.

From March 18 until March 21, 2026, the ninth annual European Hip Hop Studies Conference will take place in Groningen, the Netherlands. The conference encourages reflections and responses to Hip Hop in these times of global crisis.

We focus on Hip Hop’s many transnational expressions, from European Hip Hop (situated within complex colonial histories and political tensions), its American origins, towards wider global manifestations of the form.

We invite Hip Hop scholars to respond to the present moment of locally experienced but globally interconnected inequalities vis-a-vis Hip Hop as a potentially revolutionary form. Indeed, how can Hip Hop hold true to its original tenets when it is increasingly embedded in global corporate and political structures?

Global Hip Hop Studies: General Call for Papers 📝

Global Hip Hop Studies is a rigorous and community-responsive, peer-reviewed and Open Access academic journal that publishes research on contemporary as well as historical issues and debates surrounding hip hop music and culture around the world, twice annually.

The editors are thrilled to announce an open call for submissions for GHHS 7.1, for publication in 2026. Submission on any aspect of hip hop culture in our wide variety of formats are welcomed.

Hip Hop Matters: The EHHSN Position Paper (v 1.0 – 4 April 2025)

This position paper is intended as a concise and publicly available document to help demonstrate—to Governmental Organizations, Nongovernmental Organizations, and other International, National, Regional, and Local Policy and Funding Bodies—the relevance and importance of hip hop as a culture, movement, and set of art forms both for youth and for society at large. This document includes footnoted references and links throughout that serve to evidence and educate, culminating in a Bibliography and Further Reading section.

Please download this document and submit with your applications to anyone (grant, job, arts council, etc.) who needs a reliable, vetted, and footnoted background on the cultural, artistic, and sociopolitical importance of hip hop to today’s world. It is the product of the European Hip Hop Studies Network—a group of artists, activists, and academics dedicated to hip hop—collaboratively drafted by the 130+ delegates of the 7th Annual EHHSN Meeting in Cork, Ireland on 26 May 2024—and finalized and ratified by the EHHSN’s twenty-four National Representatives on 4 April 2025.
