WHICH LANGUAGE WILL CHOREOGRAPH THE FUTURE OF THE MEDITERRANEAN?

By Highlighting Listening as a language of its own, it becomes an act of resilience and empathy building. The Soundwalk of CURRENT FUTURES investigates how listening to more-than-human languages and stories actively shapes the protection and (re)generation of threatened marine ecosystems.
The project combines underwater acoustics, ecological data, embodied listening, spiritual ecology and community participation to cultivate ecological literacy grounded in reciprocity and coexistence to tell hidden narratives of the mediterranean sea.
The SOUNDWALK “Current Futures” translates the hidden acoustic world into an embodied experience on land. Developed and spatialized in 4DSOUND with MONOM, and in close collaboration with Montemero, it weaves underwater field recordings, evidence of acoustic pollution such as bottom trawling, and sonified ecological data from surviving individuals of dying species such as Pina Nobilis; into a spatial, embodied composition.
By listening with all our senses, participants attune their bodies to marine rhythms and more-than-human “ears”, transforming scientific knowledge into a lived, sensory understanding.
this project has come to life in close collaboration with the living laboratory Montemero - founded by biologist Emily Pappa and marine survey specialist Pino Ramon Paul Brenner - the sound artist Hamish Logan and the embodied researcher and choreographer Julia Flux, with support of the spanish marine NGO Ambiente Europeo.

MONOM Artist Residency

In June, we welcomed Indian artist, musician and educator Tarun Balani to MONOM for an artist residency exploring the spatial dimension of his sound installation Listening Room Listening Room

Working across improvisation, composition, performance and technology, Balani creates immersive sonic experiences that explore themes of climate change, migration and identity. During his residency, he further developed 2°, a 21-minute spatial sound composition created for 4DSOUND that transforms personal experiences of climate anxiety into an embodied listening experience.

Originally developed in collaboration with MONOM, 2° invites audiences into a sonic environment where movement, depth and intimacy become part of the storytelling. Through improvised acoustic and electronic sounds, the work gives voice to experiences of climate change that words alone often cannot express, opening space for reflection on climate justice, equity and our shared future.

Reflecting on his residency, Tarun shared:

“My residency at MONOM opened up new sonic possibilities for how I write, record, and produce music. Working with spatial sound allowed me to reimagine 2° as an immersive sonic experience, inviting listeners into a world of greater sonic depth, movement, dimensionality and intimacy -creating a more embodied way of listening.”

Tarun Balani work has been presented at India Art Fair, Serendipity Arts Festival and internationally through performances, recordings and immersive installations.

This month, we welcomed Berlin-based musician and sound artist Hunter Brown to MONOM for a residency exploring the boundaries between synthetic perception, memory and the inner voice.

Brown’s experimental practice moves through digital simulation, machine listening, psychoacoustics and spatial sound. His works examine how computational systems hear, interpret and reconstruct the world, revealing new relationships between human perception and technological mediation.

During the residency, he will develop a new multichannel composition for the 4DSOUND system. Through a custom cybernetic speech-synthesis system, the work imagines the inner voice as a self-generating process capable of hearing, transforming and recreating itself. Fragments of sonic memory, vocal traces and machine hallucinations converge into an evolving speculative voice.

Using machine-listening-driven spatial audio techniques, Brown will translate this internal phenomenon into an immersive sonic environment unfolding throughout the space.

MONOM Artist Residency

In May, we welcomed Filipina-Australian composer, producer and performer Corin Ileto to MONOM for a residency focused on developing a new multichannel composition for the 4DSOUND system.

Working across electronic composition, performance and spatial sound, Ileto’s practice moves through mythology, speculative futures, Filipino folk traditions and hyper-digital sonic textures. Her works explore sound as architecture, vibration and imagined gravitational states of being.

During the residency, she developed a new piece centered around the piano as a core sonic body, exploring the idea of the fractured and infinite self through resonance, spatial movement and tactile frequencies.
ileto work has been presented at Berlin Atonal, Unsound, CTM and beyond.

For individuals or groups looking to organize a private listening session and experience works created by MONOM Studio.

A selection of 4DSOUND works developed since the studio’s inception in 2017 to the present.

Sessions can be complemented with a deep dive into the 4DSOUND system, including an introduction to the software and its capabilities. There is also the option to incorporate a demonstration of how live instruments may be integrated within our spatial audio environment.

This is a one-time introductory experience—available to first-time applicants only—designed as an entry point for artists, musicians, and creatives interested in working with spatial sound. It offers a guided introduction to 4DSOUND.

* No prior experience with spatial audio required
* One-time access to the system
* 4h / 8h sessions

Working alongside a certified 4DSOUND engineer, participants are introduced to the fundamentals of the system—learning how sound can be positioned, moved, and shaped within space. The session combines technical orientation with direct experimentation, allowing ideas to be tested in real time.

For our upcoming event on April 11 — TransCULT, we welcome Circadian, a Berlin-based tea atelier devoted to Gyokuro, Japan’s most prestigious shade-grown green tea.

Founded in Berlin and produced in Funkhaus, Circadian translates centuries of Japanese cultivation into a contemporary beverage ritual. Gyokuro is grown on only 0.01% of Japan’s landmass and was historically reserved for the imperial court, prized for its deep umami and layered complexity.

Working directly with multigenerational farmers in Japan, Circadian transforms these leaves through an 18-hour cold extraction process, creating pure, unsweetened, non-carbonated teas that reveal the full spectrum of the plant without added flavour or preservatives.

During TransCULT, Circadian will serve three signature cold brew expressions:

Ocean Umami — full leaf
Ironwood Inlet — roasted stem
Cocoa Finish — steamed stem

Three interpretations of the same rare plant.
