Ignition alert!!

We've achieved the first successful ignitions of our V1 torch igniter!

What does this mean, you might ask? The igniter sits on top of the main combustion chamber and provides a hot stream of gas that ignites the Hopper engine. It runs on the same propellants as the main engine, nitrous oxide and ethanol, and enables fast reignitions.

After more than 100 hours of testing across many valve timings, mixture ratios, and spark plugs, our team found a configuration that performed reliably in 12 consecutive fires. This clears the way for engine ignition tests - stay tuned! The current version runs at 40 bar for up to 2 seconds; in further iterations we will make it more compact for integration into the flight engine.

Thanks to Bronkhorst, we are able to characterize the small mass flows feeding the igniter with high accuracy using their Coriolis mass flow meter. We're grateful for their partnership.

Successful rockets are built on hundreds of hotfire tests, and hotfire tests are only possible with a thoughtful software set-up running in the background.

To keep the testing process as efficient as possible, we have developed our own Ground Control Software (GCS).

It allows our small hotfire test team to actuate valves and execute autosequences at a push of a button, gives us a live sensor-measurement visualization, and makes data aquisition so much easier.

Slide 1: Running the GCS from our control room while monitoring live pressure, temperature, and mass flow data during test operations.

Slide 2: The GCS GUI provides a full Piping and Instrumentation Diagram (P&ID) for valve control in the bottom left, live sensor data in the top left and bottom right, and a valve actuation status panel in the top right.

If you’re interested in building innovative software like our GCS or joining the Hopper propulsion team for hot-fire testing, you can find our open positions through the jobs link in our bio.

Fueling 150L of propellant remotely into our Hopper Tanks is no small feat.

To safely and efficiently manage this complex process, our team built Tankwart - our dedicated remote fueling system.

When dealing with fluid lines pressurized up to 300 bar, having absolute confidence in our telemetry is mission-critical.

That is why we are incredibly grateful to partner with . Their industry-leading pressure sensors provide the exact precision and reliability we need across all measurement ranges and mediums to monitor our systems safely.

Thanks to Hentschel and KELLER, for supporting our vision with their products and expertise! 🚀

Meet "Tankwart" - the Nitrous Oxide and Nitrogen fueling station for Space Team Aachen’s Hopper project.

Here at Project Hopper, we’re busy building one of the most ambitious student-built rockets in Europe .....

And we’re hiring!

Even though the first video makes it look like we’re all about Tankwart (we sort of are) we’re hiring for many diverse roles. If you have clear interest and excitement to work in the space industry, reach out to us and apply!

You can also find out more about the different positions at👇

https://www.spaceteamaachen.de/join

or you can meet at the Tag der Studentischen Initiative on May 12th!

We also thank our tool sponsor for providing high-quality tools that are essential to the precise assembly of Tankwart and the Hopper rocket.

Meet Scorpius, Space Team Aachen's own Mars Rover!

Project Scorpius was founded in 2023 with the goal to build an autonomous Mars vehicle to compete in international university rover competitions. After building a first prototype of Scorpius in 2024, we've been working hardly on the official Version 1. The body and locomotion system are now production-ready (check out slide 2 👀), and we’re starting the manufacturing process.

For the competitions we also need

- A robotic arm and a drill that can be attached to. the rover's body
- Safe and efficient software
- Reliable onboard electronics

No worries, all of the aforementioned challenges are already worked on, but we still need more support. We’re looking for passionate people to join our team and help turn Scorpius into a fully functional Mars rover.

Check out our open positions and become part of the mission!🚀
