**Southwestern Ontario Optimist District Crowns 2026 Oratorical Champions in West Lorne**
**West Lorne, ON – April 18, 2026** — The Southwestern Ontario Optimist (SWONT) District proudly hosted its annual Oratorical Championships on April 18 in West Lorne, bringing together six exceptional youth speakers from across the region to compete under this year’s inspiring topic:
**“The Moment I Realized I Belonged — My Definition of Community.”**
Each contestant earned their place at the District level by advancing through local Optimist Club competitions, demonstrating powerful storytelling, thoughtful perspectives and outstanding public speaking skills.
The Optimist Oratorical Contest provides young people the opportunity to develop confidence and communication skills while competing for scholarships and the chance to represent their communities on the world stage. At the SWONT District Championships, scholarships of $2,500, $1,500 and $1,000 were awarded to the top three finishers.
Taking top honours was **Ifechukwu Ezeaju of Windsor**, sponsored by the Delta Alpha Theta Windsor Optimist Club. As the SWONT District Champion, Ezeaju will advance to the Optimist World Oratorical Championships, beginning with Regional competition on July 17, 2026 at **Saint Louis University** in St. Louis, Missouri.
At the Regional level, Ezeaju will compete against District champions from Michigan, Ohio, New York, Central Ontario and Midwestern Ontario. The Regional winner will receive a $5,000 scholarship and advance to the World Championships on July 18.
The following day, eight Regional winners will compete for top international honours and additional scholarships, including $15,000 for first place, $10,000 for second place and $5,000 for third place. The overall Optimist World Oratorical Champion will complete their journey with a total scholarship prize of $22,500.
Placing second in the SWONT District competition was **Charlotte Hawkins of Lucan**, sponsored by the Komoka Kilworth Optimist Club, earning a $1,500 scholarship.
Third place was awarded to **Keaghan Boersma of Ingersoll**, sponsored by the North Dorchester Optimist Club, receiving a $1,000 scholarship.
The SWONT District also recognizes the incredible efforts of the remaining finalists, each of whom demonstrated dedication and excellence in progressing through multiple levels of competition:
* **Avery McLaughlin**, sponsored by the Talbot Trail Optimist Club
* **Bianca De La Parra Verges**, sponsored by the Riverside Optimist Club
* **Pearl Munim**, sponsored by the Essex Optimist Club
“This year’s topic challenged participants to reflect deeply on belonging and the meaning of community,” said a SWONT District representative. “The speeches delivered were heartfelt, insightful and a true testament to the leadership potential of these young individuals.”
The Optimist Oratorical Contest remains one of the organization’s signature youth programs, empowering participants to find their voice, share their stories and make a meaningful impact in their communities.
