Zero Gun Violence Movement

Zero Gun Violence Movement "There is story behind every gun shot fired - are we ready to listen to the full story? Because that is where you will find the solution to gun violence.

Started with a concept and a commitment after the Danzig and Eaton Centre shootings

• The typical political and media outbursts was not addressing the real root causes of gun violence

• The typical reactionary and political response of building bigger jails, hiring more police and undertaking another research report and analysis was not going to work

• Louis March, a youth and community worker

with over 30 years of community work experience invited several organizations that worked with young men to a preliminary meeting to discuss various ideas

• Made purpose was to discuss new strategies that could be used as a pre-emptive strike on the real cause of gun violence

• A decision was made to launch the Zero Gun Violence Movement on June 21, 2013 at the Redemption Reintegration Services office in Scarborough

Present at the table were:

o Redemption Reintegration Services
o Young and Potential Fathers
o Black Daddies Club
o Afro United
o IMPACT n’ Communities
o Coalition of African Canadian Community Organizations

The initial plan was to focus on:

o How to re-engage new stakeholders and resources
o How to foster better collaborations between the organizations, programs and agencies
o How to better recognize and celebrate individual and organizational success stories
o How to clearly identify the real root causes of gun violence through an education and awareness effort

The ZGVM continues to build collaborations and supports throughout the City.

Give thanks to Youth Links, Zero Gun Violence Movement Toronto Raptors MIC Check and the many other community agencies that contributed to the event's success. Always great hearing from Youth talking not only about the gun violence problem but also about solutions. Let's keep building together for collective impact. Thanks Jose and Salma at Flemingdon Health Centre for organizing the Healing Together - Gun Violence Awareness event held at Marc Garneau CI on Friday. It was great seeing the students showcasing their talents on stage and answering the question about what they would do to improve community safety if they were the City Mayor. Nice touch getting the service providers to sign the Community Partnership Agreement to the National Gun Violence Awareness Day proclamation each year moving forward. Keep up the awesome engaging the youth and all the best with the remaining events that we have scheduled for next week. Thanks Peach for organizing yesterday's panel discussion on Toronto's gun violence problem and what next in terms of solutions. Panelists and audience were thoughtful and generous with their ideas including improvements in areas of funding, youth programming, collaboration between key stakeholders, addressing mental health and trauma concerns, youth engagement in program designs, improving parenting supports, community investments and better analysis of current City assets on the ground for real impact. Needless to say it was only scratching the service but definitely a good start. Keep up the great work at Peach and let's keep building. Thanks L'Amoreaux Collegiate for inviting me to speak to the grade 12 students on Tuesday about racial, economic, and social inequality and it's impact on violence in the City. Thanks for the engaging and lively discussion and maybe someday - you will be running things at City Hall - not as leaders of tomorrow - but as leaders of today. Keep up your awesome work. Glad to have had Britney A. from ZGVM join me in doing presentation to the Race, Ethnicity and Justice class at Toronto Metropolitan University this week. Thanks to the students for the lively engagement as we discussed the historical and current challenges as race and justice intersect in some very turbulent times - while focusing on how best to proceed to improve community safety for all. Continuing to build trust and improve transparency is a must. We have been here before. Another life lost to the scourge of gun violence - another grieving family in shock and another traumatized community- looking for answers and action from the people responsible for leadership and community safety. Plenty condolences and hope expressed yesterday at the vigil for Mr. Adu Boakye at Jane and Driftwood- knowing that this is definitely not the remedy for this chronic crisis. The time is now for laser focused leadership, courage, and will - from the people we entrust to do right for all - and against gun violence.
