Marine Heritage Society

Marine Heritage Society The Marine Heritage Society is a not-for-profit group of volunteers dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of our community's marine history.

Chantry Island is located on Lake Huron, just over a mile southwest of the Saugeen River mouth in Southampton, Ontario. On the island is a majestic Imperial Lighthouse built in the mid 1800’s, as well as the Keeper’s quarters and a boat house. In 1822, during a hydrographic survey, Captain Henry Bayfield of the Royal Navy christened the island and named it after his friend and British sculptor Sir Francis Chantry.

Looking for a drone picture of Jubilee Park that I would be able to turn into a treasure map for our upcoming Festival. I would use Google Maps but it is not up to date with the new trails

What MHS volunteers found inside the Saugeen River Rear Range Light was more than local history β€” it was wood-boring beetles. πŸͺ²

πŸ”¨ After 1,200 volunteer hours, Southampton Harbour’s second beacon is once again shipshape and standing tall.

β›΅ Visitors will also have an opportunity to see the restored Range Lights during this summer’s Marine Heritage Festival.

πŸ“– Thank you to of Saugeen Shores for sharing this story and highlighting the many volunteers, supporters, and community partners involved in the restoration.
