Tools and rides? Charge outside. šŸ”‹
Charge e-bikes, scooters and power tools outside when possible — and always keep exits clear.

It’s Fire Prevention Week!

Burny’s kicking things off with a simple reminder: cheap or uncertified charging cords aren’t worth the risk.

Look for a recognized Canadian certification mark such as CSA, cUL or cETL, use the charger made for your device, and replace damaged cords.

This past weekend, members of Pasadena Fire Rescue attended the 60th Annual Convention of the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Fire Services in Gander.

While there, our Muscular Dystrophy Chair Alexandre Maia Louro and Acting Fire Chief Kevin Garnier and members were proud to present a cheque for $5,000 to Muscular Dystrophy Canada, accepted by Shelley McWilliams on behalf of the organization.

The connection between firefighters and Muscular Dystrophy Canada goes back more than 70 years. Since 1954, career and volunteer firefighters across Canada have raised more than $100 million through boot drives, car washes, community BBQs, stair climbs, truck pulls and countless other local fundraisers.

Muscular Dystrophy Canada supports people and families affected by neuromuscular disorders — conditions that can progressively affect muscle strength, mobility, breathing and independence. Funds raised by firefighters help support research, access to vital equipment, programs, advocacy and services for Canadians living with these disorders.

Here at home, our firefighters are proud to carry on that tradition through events such as our annual PFR Car Show and Car Wash. Every vehicle registered, every car washed and every donation from our community helps us contribute to a cause firefighters across Canada have stood behind for generations.

$5,000 from Pasadena to help make a difference.

Thank you to everyone who supported our fundraising efforts and helped us present this cheque. We couldn’t do it without our community.

There’s an old misconception that ā€œvolunteerā€ means less prepared.

The fire doesn’t know whether the firefighter holding the nozzle is career or volunteer. And when the call comes, there’s no time to get ready.

So we train. We drill. We prepare.

Tonight, it’s just water on an empty field.

Tomorrow, it won’t be.

The nights are getting cooler, and space heaters are coming out of storage.

Before you plug yours in, give it some space. NFPA recommends keeping portable heaters at least 3 feet (1 metre) from anything that can burn and plugging them directly into a wall outlet — never an extension cord or power bar.

And when you leave the room or head to bed, turn it off and unplug it.

Some ideas are better left under the sheet.

Even LED lights can become a fire hazard when cords or components are damaged. Before decorating:

• Choose certified/approved light sets from reputable manufacturers.
• Check cords for cracks, fraying, exposed wires or damaged plugs.
• Replace damaged sets — don’t try to make them last another season.
• Keep lights and electrical decorations clear of fabric and other combustible materials.

A quick check before you plug them in can prevent a much bigger problem later.

Pasadena Fire Rescue is saddened to learn of the passing of former Fire Chief Gerald Wight, who passed peacefully on August 16 at the age of 92.

Gerald dedicated 30 years of service to the fire department, including serving as Fire Chief. His commitment to public service extended throughout our community through his long career with the Town of Pasadena, where he served as Town Superintendent before retiring in 1995, as well as through his service as a volunteer ambulance driver.

Gerald’s legacy of service continues within our department through his grandson, Lieutenant Jeffrey Clarke.

On behalf of the officers and members of Pasadena Fire Rescue, we extend our sincere condolences to Lt. Clarke and the entire Wight family during this difficult time.

We thank Gerald for his many years of leadership, dedication and service to Pasadena.

Rest easy, Chief.
