Born and raised in Curling as one of nine children, Helen Meaney has deep roots in Western Newfoundland and a lifelong appreciation for family, tradition, and community. After completing a commercial business program, she began her career in finance with Household Finance Corporation in Corner Brook in 1968. She later served as Credit Manager with Corner Brook Pontiac before settling in Pasadena with her husband Jerome and their identical twin sons, making the community their home for more than four decades.
A lifelong learner, Helen returned to vocational school to study hairdressing and went on to establish a successful home-based business in Pasadena. Her interest in heritage and genealogy deepened after discovering her Mi’kmaq ancestry in 2009, inspiring her to document family stories, traditions, and genealogy for future generations. Working with her siblings, she also helped create a six-generation family tree.
Helen enjoys writing rhyming poetry, painting, genealogy, meditation, knitting, and other traditional crafts. An outdoor enthusiast, she and her family have long enjoyed snowmobiling, ATV riding, boating, skiing, hiking, and cabin life, with kayaking becoming a favourite pastime in recent years. She is also passionate about exploring Canada’s history and culture, highlighted by a memorable cross-country Roadtrek adventure in 2015.
Helen joined the Pasadena Heritage Society – NL in 2026 to help preserve local stories, traditions, and cultural knowledge. Her enthusiasm for family history, creativity, and lifelong learning makes her a valued member of the Society’s Board of Directors.
