BREAKING NEWS

Today, we are relieved that the Manitoba Court of Appeal has found the People's Party of Canada vicariously liable for defamation after a Twitter post from a PPC account labelling a Muslim community member a terrorist.

This has been a long time coming.

Our legal team supported the plaintiff who took the PPC to court on this matter in 2020. We have sustained our efforts to hold them to account. Our legal team has fought hard all the way through.

Today, with the important help of our external cousel Imran Qureshi (DLA Piper), the plaintiff won.

Those seeking electoral power in Canada must be held to the highest levels of accountability. There is no place for Islamophobia anywhere in Canada. Our community will not be intimidated.

Multiple Islamic schools across Ontario and Canada have been hit with threatening emails more than once in the past few weeks.

These include death threats that call for Muslims to leave or face violence.

This, and the growing rate of anti-Muslim violence across Canada in recent years, is a major wake up call for the need for more systemic solutions.

We need an emergency national strategy that looks at this crisis honestly and realistically.

The safety of our communities, of our schools, and of our children, is at stake.

Amid the uncertainty and challenges facing Quebec society, this election is undoubtedly one of the most consequential of our time.

We are so delighted to have been a partner on this new report, with Trent University and York University’s Islamophobia Research Hub—“Muslim Student Voice”—that is launching today.

The report is the result of an intense storytelling retreat last fall, which centred 30 Muslim students and their experiences.

Their stories and reflections made it clear that a number of systemic solutions and approaches must be implemented in order to address the ongoing and growing problem of Islamophobia inside our schools and classrooms.

From marginalization to a lack of belonging, Muslim students are being pressured to associate their faith identity with many kinds of negativity.

No student should feel this way. We need real, concrete action.

“Muslim Student Voices” provides a clear snapshot of this issue as it exists today and calls for clear solutions and changes to provide a safe and fair environment where Muslim students are not just tolerated, but respected and thriving.

The Second Sons is a white nationalist group that has been growing across Canada for years, carrying out actions to intimidate various communities.

It is disgusting and alarming to see them pull such antics now against an Indigenous community.

We’ve been saying this for over a year - Canada must ban the Second Sons by listing it as a prohibited terrorist entity. It cannot be allowed to grow and act further.

The rise of antisemitism and Islamophobia in Canada has been horrifying to witness. All communities must come together in the face of hate.

We will never accomplish this goal, however, if our approach is to shut down criticism of foreign governments or any ideology.

Today, a Public Safety Canada report suggests that anti-Zionism is always equivalent to antisemitism.

As a matter of free expression and speech, Canadians must be able to critique any ideology, including Zionism. They must also be allowed to critique a government in Israel that claims to be inspired by Zionism.

Thus, labelling anti-Zionism as antisemitic sets a dangerous precedent.
It is precisely why a court in Australia recently held that anti-Zionism cannot be collapsed into the same category as antisemitism.

While we are seeking clarity from government as how their latest statement should be interpreted, all options are on the table, including a legal challenge.

We urge all to approach your local MPs to respectfully seek clarity on this issue.

Our Charter rights, including the right to critique any government or ideology, must be protected.

It is utterly horrifying and disgusting to witness this mass death threat issued to Islamic schools across Ontario.

We have now witnessed, in Canada, several overt calls of violence aimed at Muslims and Muslim communities. This is a threat that puts our broader social fabric in great danger. It must be addressed with the utmost urgency and seriousness.

We know what the result of unchecked threats and Islamophobia looks like it Canada. It is deadly. It has made Canada into the leading G-7 country when it comes to Islamophobia motivated murders.

We cannot accept this as the norm. It is time to act.

We call on all elected leaders to condemn this latest incident, and to sit down with community members to build a National Strategy on Combatting Islamophobia.

It is deeply disheartening to see yet another Muslim community member attacked, this time at a Toronto bus stop.

Toronto police is investigating what happened, and the survivor is recovering from her injury.

No one deserves to feel unsafe, or be physically assaulted, while simply living their lives in their communities.

It is a relief to see the Durham Regional Police Service arrest and lay charges against this individual, who has consistently been promoting the worst kinds of Islamophobic violence.

The Muslim community in Toronto’s Durham area raised many concerns on this person to law enforcement, along with the major spike in anti-Muslim hate in the area. We have also been working with the authorities on this horrifying case.

Community members and allies refuse to let this sort of Islamophobia become the norm in Durham, Toronto, or Canada.

We call on all elected leaders to denounce the arrested individual’s hateful messages, and for Canada to adopt a National Strategy on Combatting Islamophobia.
