On September 14th, 2015, democracy took a slap in the face in Nipawin, Saskatchewan. Never heard of us? Besides having our town nestled in a beautiful, natural, northern landscape on the edge of the life-giving Boreal Forest, our Tobin Lake has also been named as one of the top ten places to fish in Canada. Since nearly the beginning of this year, citizens of Nipawin have been learning of our Coun
cil's plans to carve a piece out of our public Central Park to be sold and developed as an executive condominium. It started with a petition and turned into a referendum that was held on September 9, 2015. Council wanted to be sure they were doing the right thing and representing the community with the sale of this public property. Their resolution to sell was defeated with 52% voting "no." The community felt the matter had been settled and the town could begin seeking an alternate solution. On September 14th, 2015, at the next Town Meeting, our Council decided to go against the wishes of our people and sell the land anyway. It was a heartbreaking moment as many people were there to hear the decision and none were allowed to speak until after it had been made. We have not given up. We disagree with the over-ruling of our majority. We feel our democracy has not been upheld. We are prepared to fight. United we stand. Divided we fall. Please join us in our fight.
