If you were ever curious what skill development looks like with EcoHoops…….

This was a small training group for our u14 Girls to work on Ball Handling 🏀

Can you tell what specific skills we were working on????

Ball Handling doesn’t need to be boring 🥱 , it doesn’t need to be rote repetitive drills that players can do alone at home 🏡

Players need to develop things like TOUCH, TIMING, BALANCE, COORDINATION, CREATIVITY, CONTROL etc… and those Skills can ONLY be developed by giving the athlete problems to solve. This can be done by putting a defender, wearing gloves, using worn out basketballs, using different size and type of balls, using balloons 🎈 while dribbling, chasing, sprinting, changing directions. These are a few good ways to challenge the players.

Differential Learning is all about challenging the brain 🧠 and body💪🏽 to find as many different solutions to problems as possible.

When developing skills, it’s NOT about technique or mechanics, it’s about solving problems. There’s NO SUCH THING AS PROPER MECHANICS! That is a MYTH that has been debunked in Sports Science 🧬

What works for some players won’t necessarily work for others, it’s about figuring out what works for each player individually.

Athletes are NOT robots 🤖 to be programmed.

If you are an athlete that’s tired of old school training, and want to have FUN while ALSO DEVELOPING REAL SKILLS….

You ever think 💭 about how Kids will play video games 🎮 for hours, but put them in a practice full of rigid, monotonous drills, and suddenly they look like they’re doing chores.🧹🧼

Kids don’t quit the sport 🏀⚽️🏒🏈 they love ❤️

They quit🚫 when it gets boring.🥱

They quit when it feels like nothing they do is ever good enough. 👎🏽

They quit when coaches try to prescribe every single movement, leaving them with zero autonomy.

Joy isn’t just a bonus. IT’S THE ENGINE.🔋

Bruce Lee 🐉 said, “Notice that the stiffest tree is most easily cracked, while the bamboo or willow survives by bending with the wind.”

Players are the exact same way.

They need room to bend, adapt, and make their own decisions on the court.

You can’t joystick🕹️ a human being.

This doesn’t mean that players are just fooling around and doing whatever they want (even though to the untrained 👁️ it might look 👀 that way 😂) and it also doesn’t mean a coach cannot be demanding or hold players accountable.

The chaos is planned. We design games and set rules that force players to solve problems.

Accountability isn’t about micromanaging a robotic move. It means demanding their absolute best effort, focus, and intent while they figure the game out.

No autonomy = no joy
No joy = no real skill

At EcoHoops, We don’t chase perfection.
We set the environment and let them create.

Because PLAY BUILDS PEOPLE

In this fun ball handling/warmup game, the players paired up 2️⃣ and had to keep their head 🙂‍↔️on a swivel to know where their partner was at all times.

In the 2nd version the player behind could pass the dribbler and it became a tag/sprint to the baseline.

You can add different constraints to make it more challenging.

Try it out in your next practice!

Can you find the hidden veggies 🥗 in the lasagna?!?!

Most people who don’t understand how we do things at EcoHoops, will see a drill like this one and think 💭 we’re just doing a fun drill 🎉 and messing around.

But what’s ACTUALLY going on is we’re tricking the players into getting better without them even realizing it. (Our players are used to this by now lol)

Honestly, I just got so bored of watching kids stand in lines to dribble around dead plastic cones. And telling players to “pound the ball” or “keep your eyes up”.

I started looking for ways to make practice feel like the actual sport….messy, fast, and unpredictable.

So, I threw a dodgeball into the mix.

Instead of me standing on the sideline yelling “drop your hips!” or “keep your eyes up!”, the game does the teaching for me.

To keep from getting hit by the dodgeball, they have to look over their shoulder and use their peripheral vision while dribbling.
• To run the 3-point line at top speed, they have to figure out how to lean and control the ball on a sharp curve (because basketball is almost never played in perfect straight lines!)

The players think it’s a wild game of tag. But really, they’re learning how to control their bodies, handle the ball under high pressure, and react to an actual moving person instead of just waiting for my whistle.

It looks like chaos, but that’s exactly where the magic happens.

If you’re tired 🥱 of old school basketball training and want something modern and fun while also backed by sports 🏀 ⚽️ 🏈 science 🧪 DM for a FREE SESSION!!!

This is a partner shooting game.

- Offense starts with the ball and defense is a few feet away facing them.
- Offense starts and defense reacts by sprinting to get both feet behind the designated line and then going to contest the shot
- Offense can ONLY shoot 🎯🏀

Add Constraints like “Swishes ONLY”
