Just another reminder to tell the government why proposed areas should be protected.

Do you want to see more protected areas in Mi’kma’ki/Nova Scotia? Be a voice for nature! 📣

You can submit your comments and vouch for more protected areas, until July 28. There are currently 13 candidate areas that you can support, and it only takes a few minutes to make an impact.

Protected areas safeguard Nova Scotia’s unique biodiversity, including diverse ecosystems and native species, such as Mainland Moose, Atlantic Salmon, rare lichens, and many others.

At home and abroad, habitat loss is the leading threat to biodiversity. But protected areas can make a real and lasting impact. By helping protect these 13 candidate sites, together, we’d be protecting 1,946 hectares of the woodlands, lakes, barrens and rivers that Nova Scotia’s wildlife call home.

These are just a few of the pictures taken yesterday on a short hike around part of Feely Lake in advance of Nature Nova Scotia's Protected Areas Week (July 25th to August 1).
The highlight of our walk was sighting a barred owl. But we also encountered tadpoles, frogs, raccoon prints, and a a little bit of unidentified s**t, plus mosquitoes, black flies, beetles, wasps (the non-stinging kind), and a few butterflies. One of our walkers even had a tick (I know - ick). But ticks are almost everywhere, so remember to bring bug/tick spray and/or protective clothing if you go explore.

The were plenty of different species of trees, moss, lichens, and even berries (both edible and non-edible)

The area is easily accessible at the intersection of Rossing and Larrigan in Lower Sackville if you want to check out the area.

The Province has opened consultation on 13 proposed new or expanded wilderness areas and nature reserves, including the Sackville Wilderness Area which includes Feely Lake, one of two headwater lakes for the Little Sackville River.

The forested area around the lake contains large hemlock, red spruce, and hardwood trees and is home to a number of animals and birds.

Now is your chance to contribute your thoughts about this area and why it should be protected.

The annual AGM of the Sackville Rivers Association is tonight at the Sackville Heights Community Centre at 7 PM. Everyone is welcome to attend. It's also a good reminder for those members to renew their membership or for anyone who wants to join us to sign up. If you sign up for two years, we'll even give you a cool SRA ballcap!

Our meeting tonight will feature Lisa Blackburn as our MC and our guest speaker is Eddie Halfyard:

Dr. Eddie Halfyard is Co-Founder and CTO of CarbonRun, where he applies his background in freshwater ecology and environmental restoration to create innovative climate technologies that restore river health while removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

How'd you like your very own Sackville Rivers Association ballcap?

We have a bunch right now. All you have to do is sign up for a membership for 2 years (that's only $20) and you get a cool ballcap!

You can sign up for a year long membership as well for only $10 (but no cap).

Here's the thing:
We don't require you to do anything as a member, but we hope that you'll join us at events, clean ups, and the Annual General Meeting (this year June 18). We can always use volunteers to help out with our dinner auction, the duck races, our indoor yard sale, and the cleanups of course. And we're always looking to add to our Board of Directors.
