Manitoulin Streams Environmental non-profit on Manitoulin Island focused on restoring stream and watershed habitats.

The mandate of our association is to create, through the rehabilitation and enhancement of important cold water streams, healthy and self-sustaining river ecosystems that contribute to the ecological, economic and social health of Manitoulin Island and the Great Lakes that surround it.

🐟Stream tours have begun!🐟

We took two high school classes to tour two sites in two days!! Lively Secondary School brought their environmental SHSM students and Espanola High School brought their Ravens to learn about stream restoration, salmon life cycles, and invasive species🌊

Both classes visited Blue Jay Creek Fish Culture to learn about the MNRs stocking program, facilities, and our restoration site on Blue Jay Creek. The SHSM students came to check out the spawning salmon in the Kagawong River, what the flood left behind, and what has been done to remediate the damage so far. The Ravens started their day in Providence Bay to see early spawning Chinook salmon and some of our restoration sites!

🎃 That’s a wrap on our fall events 🍁

We attended five fall fairs, festivals, or harvest events! Along with Henry the northern river otter, we talked to hundreds of students and adults about our work and environment. They learned about the spread of invasive species and the impacts they make on the ecosystem. Henry demonstrated the art of taxidermy and taught many students how to be respectful towards wildlife 🦦

🐟It’s o-fish-ally stream tour season!🐟

Haven’t booked a stream tour yet? There’s still time! Get hooked on this amazing opportunity to bring your class, organization, or friends and family on a guided tour along the streams where local salmon lay their eggs. Learn about the salmon life cycle, our stream restoration projects, native flora and fauna, and invasive species while enjoying the calming ambience of the nearby stream.

Join us at your pick of our resilient restoration locations:

🏞️Kagawong River Trail
🌊Blue Jay Creek Fish Hatchery, Tehkummah
🏝️Mindemoya River, Providence Bay

Tours last 30 min to 1 hour. You can book multiple locations in one day by filling out two booking forms. Let us know if your arrival does not line up with the time slots and we can accommodate your group. Minimum tour fee is $40, for groups larger than 10 students are $5 each, chaperones are free! If you have any additional questions please reach out to [email protected].

🌳 Looking to help out? 🌲

We have trees to plant at Sucker Creek in Aundeck Omni Kaning First Nation and hoping to get some help from community members. Come for as long as you want, any time you spend helping will make a difference. Make sure to bring boots, water, and gloves; dress for the weather. ☀️ ☁️

This coming up Tuesday October 6, 2026 we will be planting trees at our restoration along Sucker Creek. Parking is available along Wabuno Road. Meet us at the site for 10:00 am. We hope to see you there! There will be refreshements, snacks and prizes drawn for those that come out to help out.

Learn about the salmon life cycle, our stream restoration projects, native flora and fauna, and invasive species while enjoying the calming ambience of the nearby stream.

You are invited to join us at our 2026 Annual General Meeting! We will be discussing our 2025-2026 achievements, re-elect new board members, and our restoration efforts to date. 🛥️ Summer on the Chi Cheemaun 🛥️

This summer we had the pleasure of talking to travellers coming to and from South Baymouth on the Chi Cheemaun! This opportunity allowed us to stress the importance of invasive species awareness and encourage visitors to practice clean travelling. We loved answering burning questions about invasive species, native wildlife, and our restoration work🦌🌱

Friends of Manitoulin Turtles joined us twice to share her knowledge on Manitoulin turtles with cute arts and crafts for the kiddos 🐢 Thank you Amelia!

Thank you to the Chi Cheemaun for having us every week from July to September, we had a blast and we can’t wait to see you next summer! 🌊

Thanks to the partnership between Central Manitoulin and Manitoulin Streams we were able to dredge open the Mindemoya River again this year to let the salmon into spawn. A huge thank you to the MNR who provided the dredging permits and helped by opening the fish valve at the dam to allowing more water downstream during the spawning run. They also allowed the Municipality to remove the trees that came downstream during the spring flood that became a safety concern for the Municipality this summer as kids were playing on them and there was a potential of them slipping and getting hurt on the sharp branches. This Thursday, September 24, 2026 we will be planting trees at our restoration site MIN 670. Parking is available at the McNevin St. parking lot or along the road before 76 Garland St. Meet us at the site (marked by the red pin) for 10:00 am. We hope to see you there!
