Well, I have to send a huge thank you to all the organizations, volunteers and businesses that supported our Island Wide Garbage Cleanup this year! What an outstanding effort to reduce garbage and plastic waste from getting into our local waters. We couldn't have done it without all of your help and it is obvious that our communities care about our beautiful island!

365 participants, 518 bags of garbage removed from 256km, 16 community groups and families and friends involved. Congrats to Town of Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands - NEMI for winning the community award, Kenjgewin Teg Educational Institute for School Award, Assiginack Fire Department for Business Award, and Jamie Pyette and Amelia Wood tied for 1st place for the Garbage Hero award, Zak Nicholls 2nd place and Olivia third place. We will randomly draw names for additional prizes for volunteers that contributed toward the cleanup event and they will be contacted.

On Tuesday our staff as well as the Nature Conservancy of Canada went out to Aundeck Omni Kaning First Nation to tackle patches of Garlic mustard that were documented in their forests. Garlic mustard has harmful impacts on forest ecosystems and is an aggressive invading species. It can cause an imbalance toward native species by altering the chemistry of the soil and inhibits growth of tree seedlings and other native plants. This area will be monitored over a number of years to ensure that it doesn't get established. , , , , , . , ,

💙🌎💧🐟Georgian Bay Forever loves keeping microplastics out of our waters!!! 💧🐟💙🌎

Nic Love contacted us and wanted to come to the island and help out with our island wide garbage cleanup!! We ventured out with him and cleaned up 3 kms just beyond Strawberry Lane down to Fort Sheg! We found pieces of a vehicle, chair and cushion, and a duvet in a garbage bag! 14 bags of garbage collected. Huge shout out to Nic as he even helped sort the recyclables and helped track items we are finding in our ditches and waterways! 👏🐟💧

We are coming to end of our cleanup and we will be sharing results shortly! Sorting items and tallying will take a little longer but we plan to share our results!

World Turtle Day!!! Watch for turtles crossing our roads and help them if you can do it safely! Let’s Support Friends of Manitoulin Friends of Manitoulin Turtles and the good work they do! 💧🐢

💙🌎💧🐟Lake Mindemoya is looking Magnificent!!!💧🐟💙🌎

Huge shout out to the Lake Mindemoya Stewardship Committee who collected 14 bags of garbage along the shoreline roads of Lake Mindemoya from Idyll Glen, along the KetchanKookem Trail, Lakeshore Rd, to the government dam. About 4 kms. 👏🐟💧

Zak cleaned up the trail behind the information Centre (1 bag and metal sheet) and at Strawberry Lookout (1 bag and tire) and Amelia and 2 members from Friends of Manitoulin Turtles cleaned south of Sunsite road (2 bags) and south of 10 mile point (4 bags).
