When people talk about Québec, the conversation often gravitates toward language, politics, or identity. Those topics matter, of course, but they can sometimes flatten a much richer and more human story.
In this week’s ShiftED Podcast #98, host Chris sits down with playwright, filmmaker, and author Guy Rex Rodgers for a thoughtful conversation on what we remember, what we forget, and how history is shaped by the stories we choose to tell.
Rodgers has spent years exploring the often-overlooked experiences of English-speaking Québecers, not to challenge Québec’s French identity, but to add depth, context, and nuance to our understanding of it.
As educators, there is an important lesson here.
Students often encounter history as a collection of dates, movements, and major events. Yet meaningful learning happens when we uncover the personal stories hidden between the headlines. Who lived through these changes? How did communities adapt? What perspectives were left out of the textbook?
This conversation reminds us that history is not only about what happened, but also about whose voices are remembered.
