Happy International Trails Day!

Here are a few ways to celebrate International Trails Day while following Leave No Trace principles:

🥾Try a new trail and make sure to plan ahead and prepare.

🚶 Stay on designated trails and travel on durable surfaces.

️🗑 Join a trail cleanup or pack out any litter you find to help dispose of waste properly.

We’ve touched down in Kamloops for the Outdoor Recreation Council of British Columbia Conference at Thompson Rivers University!

Our Executive Director Elizabeth Thorsen, and Board Members Dr. Clara-Jane Blye, and Ryan Stuart are on‑site representing Leave No Trace Canada and contributing across multiple sessions throughout the conference.

Elizabeth will be moderating Friday's morning session on Responsible Recreation with 4TVI (Tourism Vancouver Island), Airbnb and BC AdventureSmart.

CJ will be presenting research findings from Revelstoke Thanksgiving Back, a regenerative tourism initiative led by Tourism Revelstoke that invites visitors to contribute time, care, and resources to the places they enjoy.

And Ryan just wrapped moderating a session on How to Build Financial Sustainability and Community Impact with Social Enterprise.

Outdoor recreation leaders from across BC are gathering to celebrate 50 years of ORCBC and strengthen the future of outdoor stewardship and community collaboration. If you’re here, come find us—we’d love to connect.

Stay tuned for more photos and reflections from the conference to come.

🐾 This moment looks like pure freedom — but take a closer look. Do you think Tilly is on leash or off leash here?

Letting dogs roam can be wonderful enrichment, yet it also comes with real trade‑offs: flushed wildlife, trampled habitat, and unpredictable interactions on busy trails. Leash rules help balance everyone’s experience.

What an inspiring night at An Evening with Tommy Caldwell , presented by EDELRID at MEC Vancouver. We’re grateful to MEC, EDELRID, and Tommy for bringing the community together in support of outdoor education and responsible recreation.

From climbing demos to conversations about stewardship, it was energizing to see so many people engaging with Leave No Trace principles.

As a charity, we’re grateful to partners like MEC who make it possible for us to keep doing this work. If you or your organization want to join us as a partner, you can learn more at the link in or bio (https://leavenotrace.ca/partner/).

- A look at our Leave No Trace booth at MEC Vancouver, where we connected with climbers about low‑impact recreation and how everyday decisions add up to real protection for the places we love.

- Tommy Caldwell leading a climbing tutorial with MEC — sharing technique, passion, and a deep respect for the outdoors. A reminder that great climbing starts with great stewardship.

- Our Leave No Trace Trainer, Bryant Race, speaking with an attendee about outdoor ethics and how simple habits can reduce our collective impact.

- A behind‑the‑scenes moment with Tommy Caldwell chatting with the EDELRID team, whose partnership helps support education and responsible recreation.

- Tommy Caldwell and Canadian climber SonnieTrotter on stage with EDELRID, sharing stories, insights, and a shared commitment to protecting the places that shaped their careers.

Leadership Announcement!

Leave No Trace Canada is pleased to announce Elizabeth Thorsen as our inaugural Executive Director.

Elizabeth steps into this role following her service as Vice-Chair and Board member of Leave No Trace Canada. With more than 15 years of experience leading and scaling nonprofit and sustainability-focused organizations, she brings deep expertise in operations, governance, and strategic growth.

Previously, Elizabeth held a senior leadership role at Foresight Canada, where she supported national expansion and strengthened partnerships across the country. She is also the founder of Elle Thorsen Consulting, supporting mission-driven organizations with impact strategy and sustainable growth.

“I’m honoured to step into the role of Executive Director at Leave No Trace Canada. This is a deeply values-aligned mission for me, and one that feels especially critical right now. As more people spend time outdoors and our natural spaces face increasing pressure, the role of education, stewardship, and shared responsibility has never been more important.”
— Elizabeth Thorsen, Executive Director, Leave No Trace Canada

“Elizabeth brings an impressive track record to Leave No Trace Canada as a purpose-driven operations leader and business strategist. She will be invaluable in strengthening our operations and governance, growing our funding model, and working with partners and instructor networks to deliver the evolving Leave No Trace curriculum at scale.”
— John Trenholme, Chair, Board of Directors

We look forward to continuing this work together to strengthen environmental stewardship and responsible outdoor recreation across Canada.
