Happy Labour Day long weekend!

Ahead of one of the busiest weekends of the year for our parks and outdoor spaces, it’s a good time to remind everyone of the 7th Principle: Respect others. While it's important to be respectful to everyone who shares these outdoor spaces, it is also important to acknowledge the people behind the scenes who work in these spaces.

From park staff and trail crews to volunteers and local organizations, countless people work year-round to maintain, protect and preserve these spaces.

This long weekend, we encourage you to give back to the people and places that we adore.

Yes! 🐾 On International Dog Day, we wanted to give everyone a quick reminder of some of the best ways to with your dog

#1) Plan ahead & prepare: Know whether dogs are permitted, make sure your dog can handle the terrain and conditions, and bring what they need. Always bring a leash.

#2) Travel on durable surfaces: Just like you, your dog should stay on the trail and sometimes out of the water. This prevents erosion, avoids disturbing any nests, and protects sensitive areas.

#3) Dispose of waste properly: This is a given. Your dog's p**p is your responsibility, don't leave it on the side of the trail.

#4) Leave what you find: Don’t let your dog dig or disturb natural features. Check them for anything they might carry onto or away from the trail.

#6) Respect wildlife: Keep your pup away from wildlife. Keeping them leashed is one of the best ways to protect your dog, wildlife, and yourself.

#7) Respect others: Don't let your dog distrupt other trying to enjoy the outdoors. They might be great off leash, but not everyone knows that. Always keep them under control.

Don't always trust Google Maps or AI

We've all had that one friend who trusts Google Maps or AI a little too much when it comes to planning the next group adventure.

Sure, these tools can be useful in urban environments, but they don't always work as well outside of them.

Our suggestion: always follow principle #1 (Plan ahead and prepare)

That means checking the weather, knowing the elevation gain, packing adequate food and water, carrying essential safety equipment and the knowledge to use it, starting early and, of course, knowing when to turn around. A map is only one part of planning.

Can you spot the difference between these two photos? 👀

It might take a closer look, but one has an orange peel, an apple core and a banana peel left on the trail. 🍊🍎🍌

“BuT tHeY’rE bIoDeGrAdAbLe?!?!”

While these items can biodegrade, that doesn’t mean they belong on the trail. The conditions needed for them to break down properly often don't exist where you leave them. And they can still attract wildlife, look unsightly and take a long time to disappear.

Remember: If it doesn’t grow there, it doesn’t go there.

Follow Principle #3: Dispose of Waste Properly. Pack it in. Pack it out.

This National Mountain Climbing Day, we're reflecting on an inspiring evening with Tommy Caldwell.

Back in April, our Executive Director attended An Evening with Tommy Caldwell, hosted in partnership with MEC Vancouver and EDELRID . While Tommy's climbing achievements are undeniably extraordinary, the conversation was a reminder that every outdoor adventure, whether big or small, also comes with a responsibility to care for the places we love.

The answer is: you don't. Ever.

When fire bans are in place, the only ‘safe’ campfire is no campfire.

According to the Canadian Wildland Fire Information System, nearly 44% of reported wildfires in Canada this season have been human-caused.

We all have a role to play in preventing human-caused wildfires: Follow the 5th principle: Minimize Campfire Impacts

🔥 Respect fire bans.

🔥 Never leave a campfire unattended.

🔥 Completely extinguish permitted fires before leaving.
