June 2011, I get a call from a friend of mine , Michelle at Bow Wow Rescue. “Jen , I have three tiny pup rescues in here from a puppy mill, they’re scared and timid, would you take one on? just till I can find a home 3 weeks tops”
Zipped into my coat that fateful night , staring up at me with those big dark eyes, saying thank you , I knew I was in big trouble.
Fast forward 15 years , I am the ultimate Rescue Failure
I named her
Mi-lah , as in, “My lap dog” but Molly she became.
She travelled with me across Canada in 2014 and back with the kids Bike tour 7650
We cried together when the kids left off to university
She was mine and i was hers.
We trusted each other explicitly to look after one another and watch over the other .
Her greetings of relief when I arrived home were like no other, whether it was a week or an hour. The same frantic … oh thank god you’re home , where have you been , I’ve been worried, now sit down and tell me all about it,
That sweet heartfelt greeting never got old.
Ian said she knew I was on my way home 20 min or so before I’d arrived , always at different times of the day. It was a telepathy of sorts we humans can’t quite understand.
We travelled together , ate together, slept together.
And within 24 hours , Feb 28 2026. I had to say my good byes to this dear sweet soul who had loved me more than anyone ever could.
My heart has been absolutely shredded on her passing but as the days go by I’m starting to be so very grateful to have had a love like hers.
Thank you for that call Michelle.
