Art in the Alley Feature: "Woman Inspired by a Whale" by Meghan Lewick

We are excited to highlight local artist and sculptor Meghan Lewick, who calls Vancouver Island and the BC Central coast her backyard and Campbell River her second home. Inspired by our lush natural landscape, Meghan’s art connects two deeply personal passions: environmental stewardship and bodily healing. Having recovered from a life-threatening injury through practices like yoga, Meghan paints and sculpts yoga figures as a powerful reminder of resilience, reflecting the need to care for both our physical bodies and our planet.

Her featured piece, Woman Inspired by a Whale, draws inspiration from champion surfer and artist Peggy Oki, who dedicated her life to protecting Gray Whales after a profound encounter in the ocean. Echoing Oki’s message to "allow things to unfold and you will find your purpose in life," Meghan’s artwork reminds us that recovery is possible and that hope is found through action.

🎨Art in the Alley Feature: "A Quiet World" by Wendy Ezekiel🎨

We are honoured to feature 24-year-old contemporary visual artist, community public artist, and teaching artist Wendy Ezekiel Malaliro. Originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ezekiel fled war and insecurity to the Nakivale Refugee Settlement in Uganda, where he discovered art as a vital outlet for self-expression. Today, his practice uses symbolic figures and nature to explore human emotion, identity, resilience, and belonging.

This piece, A Quiet World, explores the ways we cope with loneliness, isolation, and depression in modern society. Highlighting music and social media as tools for comfort and connection, the artwork features a floral body to symbolize human fragility, beauty, and growth. Just like spring flowers, we thrive with meaningful interaction, but wither without connection. The vibrant figure set against a solitary backdrop powerfully reflects our deep need for community.

📣Here is the next piece that was selected for 'Art in the Alley'!📣

Next week, a stunning new piece of local art will be added to the growing gallery in the alley off 10th Ave, as part of our ongoing Art in the Alley installation!

We are proud to spotlight Campbell River’s own Bryan Mett, Broughton Arts & Media a talented Vancouver Island photographic artist whose work focuses on fine art wildlife, environmental portraiture, and regional landscapes. Bryan’s close-perspective compositions capture intimate, high-detail moments that highlight the raw character, quiet grit, and enduring presence of native species across the Pacific Northwest.

This piece, 'Youthful Resilience', was captured right here on Vancouver Island. It is an intimate portrait of a juvenile bald eagle in transition. Before developing the iconic white plumage of adulthood, a young eagle faces the harshest tests of survival, learning to navigate the coastal elements through sheer tenacity and instinct. With an unyielding, focused gaze, the piece highlights the raw determination and quiet strength required to endure and grow in the Pacific Northwest wild.

Make sure to keep an eye out for 'Youthful Resilience' when it goes up next week, and take a moment to appreciate the incredible talent captured right in our own backyard!

✨ OUR FIRST ART IN THE ALLEY IS HERE! ✨

Earlier this year, we put out a call for artists to help launch our brand-new Art in the Alley installation series, and we are beyond thrilled to introduce our very first featured artist: 'Moonlight' by Dawn Dudek ()

Part of her Filmscapes series, Moonlight explores the magical intersection of cinema, memory, and emotion. Inspired by her background in computer animation and broadcast design, Dawn works from suspended movie stills, capturing quiet, open-ended moments that allow viewers to project their own stories into the frame.

About the Artist:
Born in Winnipeg and an OCAD graduate, Dawn has led an incredible international career, from directing broadcast animation for major studios to exhibiting at the Carrousel du Louvre in Paris and the 63rd Festival de Cannes. Since relocating to Vancouver Island in 2024, she has continued to blend art, community, and conservation through local ecological and collaborative projects.

Come take a stroll down the alley behind the old HSBC building off 10th Ave to see Moonlight up close, and let the image speak to your own story.

We will be adding more murals over the coming weeks and can't wait to share them with you!
