Women's Empowerment Principles

BPW Canada in partnership with BPWI, UN Women & UN Global Compact
Launch Nationwide Women's Empowerment Initiative

What are the WEP's? (Women's Empowerment Principles)

The Women's Empowerment Principles-Equality Means Business suggests seven steps that companies, government and civil society can take to empower women in the workplace and the market place. They were launched by the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM, part of UN Women) and the United Nations Global Compact based on a multi-stakeholder consultative process in which BPW International was an active participant. The Women’s Empowerment Principles are subtitled “Equality Means Business” because the full participation of women benefits business and society as a whole. Signing the Statement of Support, CEOs and leaders in government and civil society demonstrates a commitment to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment and will encourage fellow business leaders to do the same. Establish high-level corporate leadership for gender equality.
2. Treat all women and men fairly at work – respect and support human rights and non-discrimination.
3. Ensure the health, safety and well-being of all women and men workers.
4. Promote education, training and professional development for women.
5. Implement enterprise development, supply chain and marketing practices that empower women.
6. Promote equality through community initiatives and advocacy.
7. Measure and publicly report on progress to achieve gender equality. Learn more about the Women’s Empowerment Principles:

Please join us and register for the Right to Learn Red Pashmina Walk taking place this Saturday, May 30th in Peterborough.

You can join us, your BPW Bowmanville sisters at the 2nd annual National Red Pashmina Walk — a powerful coast-to-coast demonstration of support for the millions of Afghan women and girls who have been denied their right to education.

Supported by Right to Learn’s Chapters across Canada, hundreds of participants wear red scarves and walk through their cities with an important message: Let Afghan women and girls learn.

The Red Pashmina Walk started in Peterborough, Ontario, in 2010 and has grown from a single community effort into a nationwide movement. By participating in the walk, Canadians are raising awareness, advocating for fundamental rights, and showing Afghan women and girls that they are not alone.

Registration is free, and all are welcome.

Right to Learn Afghanistan is a Canadian charity supporting education rights for women and girls in Afghanistan.

Red Dress Day has particular importance with the release of this urgent call to action.

https://chiefs-of-ontario.org/chiefs-of-ontario-marks-red-dress-day-calls-for-urgent-action-as-mmiwg2s-funding-ends/

This image from the National Human Rights Museum, in Winnipeg, posted by the BPW Canada OnLine Club, reminded me of the moving impact of this display at an event held at the museum by BPW Canada, during its inaugural year. As I stood immersed in the symbolic meaning of this powerful display, in remembrance of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, then as now, I feel the depth of loss, and resilience of survivors, and communities continuing to be impacted by the ongoing crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two Spirit people.(MMIWG2S+)
BPW Bowmanville stands in solidarity with the urgent call to action to honour the lives taken, those still missing, and the continued call for justice and systemic change.

Please sign the petition!

The "two-generation cut-off" (introduced in 1985) in Canada's Indian Act is a controversial rule that revokes a person’s Indian status if their parent and grandparent both married non-status individuals, regardless of their cultural ties. It disproportionately impacts First Nations women and their descendants, acting as a form of "forced assimilation"
It disproportionately affects First Nations women who marry non-status partners, as it restricts their ability to pass on status compared to men, particularly when paternity is disputed or following abuse.

End the Second Generation Cut Off

Indigenous women have a right to their identity, culture, and community, as well as the right to pass on their identity and culture to their children

ONWA advocates for the elimination of the second-generation cut-off in the Indian Act, which continues to perpetuate s*x and race-based discrimination against Indigenous women.

Help us end this discrimination by signing the petition calling on Parliament to adopt Bill S-2 as amended by the Senate without further delay.
