Yesterday, we said goodbye to Benjamin and Farah. These two young people were here through the YMCA SWESE program. Hailing from Ontario, they each stayed with a host family for six weeks. During the day, they worked at Vélo-Jeunesse.
Farah learned to speak to customers in French, repair bicycles (gaining technical skills), and pick up parts from resource centers. She found the people of Lac-Saint-Jean to be open and well-connected—both with one another and, above all, with nature. She is grateful to her host family for their openness. She bonded with the children, who made an effort to speak with her. Her favorite moments included visiting Octopus Park, attending concerts, and playing board games in the evening. She tried poutine, shepherd's pie, and local blueberries—specifically in ice cream, which she really enjoyed.
Benjamin really enjoyed working outdoors, including building the fence. For him, the highlight was the friendship he formed with Farah right from the start. Although he still doesn't speak French, he learned to understand some of it. He noted that French speakers tend to use a lot of hand gestures, which greatly helped his overall comprehension. At first, he was worried about fitting in with his host family. Now, he can't believe he’s already leaving. He would love to come back and play board games again—even though he knows they’ll lose.
We wish you a safe trip home, though we’ll miss you. ❤️
