Sad story... this corruption net is far and wide!

A federal judge sentenced Paz, who became a billionaire through a network of mining and steel companies, to more than 9 years in jail for money laundering late last year.
Paz is accused of receiving $98.5m (£70.6m) between 2007 and 2008 into an account intended for donations to Inhotim, but instead using some of those funds to meet the obligations of his other companies.

Bernardo de Mello Paz created one of Brazil's most famous museums but he has fallen foul of the law.

Minas International was delighted to organize an event for the Vice-Counselor Corey Skelton and the Assistant Consular Rosane Viviani at Escola Estadual Manuel Casasanta. The students had some great questions ranging from educational opportunities to how to prepare for a visa interview. A big thanks to the Consulado Geral EUA / US Consulate - Rio for their time and energy. MI has a great history with this school as we have worked with them in the past with the GlobeStrong program.

FUN FACTS ABOUT BELO HORIZONTE
• Although there are differences, many sources say that BH was the first planned city in the country. Today it is the sixth largest Brazilian city and has the fifth largest GDP.
• According to the IBGE census in 2010, Belo Horizonte is the third most forested city in Brazil. It is behind only Goiânia and Campinas.
• BH has the largest freshwater aquarium in the country. The "City Hall Aquarium - São Francisco River Basin" has about 1200 fish of approximately 50 different species.
• In Belo Horizonte, a cemetery is considered a tourist attraction. Built in 1897, Bonfim Cemetery entered the official tourist circuit in 2013 as an "attraction", in part because the bodies of former presidents, former governors, etc. are buried there.
• Considered the 5th largest soccer stadium in the country, the Mineirão is actually called "Estadio Governador Magalhães Pinto".
• In BH, all streets change their name when crossing the Avenida do Contorno, except Rua Itajubá which is located in the Floresta neighborhood, east of the capital.
• Did Belo Horizontians invent the coxinha with catupiry? Thereza Martins, who is now retired, claims to have invented it. According to her, the food was unique to her snack bar that was located on Av. Afonso Pena, in 1972.

CURIOSIDADES SOBRE BH:

- Embora haja divergências, muitas fontes afirmam que BH foi a primeira cidade projetada do país. Hoje é a sexta maior cidade brasileira e, o quinto maior PIB.

- Segundo o censo realizado pelo IBGE em 2010, Belo Horizonte é a terceira cidade mais arborizada do Brasil. F**a atrás apenas de Goiânia e Campinas.

- BH tem o maior aquário de água doce do país. O “Aquário da Prefeitura – Bacia do Rio São Francisco” possui cerca de 1200 peixes de aproximadamente 50 espécies diferentes.

- Em Belo Horizonte, um cemitério foi considerado ponto turístico. Construído em 1897, o Cemitério do Bonfim entrou para o circuito turístico oficial em 2013 com “atrações”, como corpos de ex-presidentes, ex-governadores, etc.


- Considerado como 5° maior estádio de futebol do país, o Mineirão na verdade se chama “Estádio Governador Magalhães Pinto”.

- Em BH, todas as ruas trocam de nome ao cruzar com a Avenida do Contorno, exceto a Rua Itajubá. A rua em questão f**a no Bairro Floresta, região Leste da capital.

- Inventamos a coxinha com catupiry? Thereza Martins é uma aposentada de Tiradentes e afirma ter inventado a coxinha com catupiry em Belo Horizonte. Segundo ela, o alimento era exclusivo de sua lanchonete que f**ava na Av. Afonso Pena, em 1972.
