Het Eerste Internationaal Filmgebeuren van Gent werd opgericht in 1974 door Ben Ter Elst van Studio Skoop en Dirk De Meyer van de universitaire Filmclub. Begin jaren 80 werd de organisatie verder uitgebouwd door Jacques Dubrulle en sindsdien ontwikkelde het festival zich tot één van de meest prominente Europese filmevenementen. Elk jaar in oktober stelt het festival ruim 100 langspeelfilms en 30 k

ortfilms voor uit de gehele wereld. De afgelopen jaren wist het festival een publiek van ruim 100.000 toeschouwers aan te trekken.

The First International Film Event in Ghent was founded in 1974 by Ben Ter Elst of Studio Skoop and Dirk De Meyer of the university Film Club. Jacques Dubrulle further expanded the organization in the early 1980s and, since then, the festival has developed into one of the most prominent European film events. Every year in October the festival presents over 100 feature films and 30 short films from around the world. In recent years, the festival has attracted an audience of more than 100,000 spectators.

With Wednesday Waves, Film Fest Gent offers a sneak peek into the playlists of composers, directors, musicians, and artists. This week, we are diving into the musical world of acclaimed harpist and composer Mary Lattimore!

We are thrilled to welcome her to the festival this October, where she will open Videodroom 2026 with a mesmerizing, live reimagining of the slow-cinema classic 'Old Joy'.

Met deze film leverde Ingmar Bergman een van de meest radicale en invloedrijke werken uit zijn oeuvre af, waarin hij zijn terugkerende thema’s rond identiteit, stilte en menselijke verbondenheid tot hun meest uitgepuurde vorm herleidde.

FFG On Tour presents a screening of the restored version of 'Persona' (1966), a groundbreaking film by the legendary Swedish director Ingmar Bergman.
In this avant-garde psychological drama, we are introduced to the young nurse Alma (Bibi Andersson) and the famous actress Elisabet (Liv Ullmann). Elisabet suddenly refuses to speak after performing 'Elektra' on stage and ends up in an psychiatric institution, where she falls under the care of the inexperienced Alma.

Three years of a beautiful concept brings us to our next chapter: a reimagined campaign that embraces the ever-evolving identity of Film Fest Gent. Where previously the focus lay on the precursors of cinema through cinematic motifs, 2026 focuses entirely on movement and the immersive aspect of cinema—the big screen drawing visitors in and a virtual camera moves us straight into the film.

Na drie jaar met een prachtig concept breekt een nieuw hoofdstuk aan: een vernieuwde campagne die de steeds evoluerende identiteit van Film Fest Gent omarmt. Waar voorheen de nadruk lag op de voorlopers van de cinema door middel van filmische motieven, richt 2026 zich volledig op beweging en het immersieve aspect van cinema – het grote scherm dat bezoekers naar binnen trekt en een virtuele camera die ons rechtstreeks de film insleurt.

It is with sadness that we have learnt of the passing of the Franco-Iranian writer and director Marjane Satrapi, who became world-famous for the beautiful graphic novel 'Persepolis', which she adapted into an animated film with Vincent Paronnaud; the film won the Jury Prize at Cannes in 2007 and received an Oscar nomination.

In 2015, we were delighted to welcome Marjane as a member of the international jury at Film Fest Gent, alongside Boyd van Hoeij, Sir Alan Parker, Franco Lolli and Caroline Strubbe. She was a passionate, sharp-witted and warm-hearted artist who never minced her words.

Our thoughts are with her family and loved ones.🤍

Starting today, 'DJ Ahmet' is playing in cinemas! 🙌

Georgi M. Unkovski's film tells the story of Ahmet, who dreams of becoming a DJ. Music is a refuge, a welcome distraction from his life as a shepherd in rural North Macedonia, where traditionalism reigns supreme and his future prospects are limited to his flock.
In 'DJ Ahmet', Georgi M. Unkovski shamelessly flirts with coming-of-age conventions without sacrificing originality. Make sure to go watch this film!

📣Wednesday Waves: Baloji! 📣

With Wednesday Waves, Film Fest Gent offers a glimpse into the music that composers, directors, musicians, artists... listen to. This week, multi-talented artist Baloji (director, singer, rapper, art director) curated the playlist.
In 2023, we welcomed Baloji at FFG to present his enchanting feature-length debut 'Augure' (Omen), and in 2020 he was a member of the international short film jury.

📣 FFG Talkie Björn Soenens 📣

Op donderdag 28 mei komt Björn Soenens spreken over vijf films die zijn werk en leven inspireren.

Björn Soenens is een Belgisch journalist en auteur, vooral bekend door zijn werk als Amerika-correspondent voor VRT. Hij woonde acht jaar in de Verenigde Staten en schreef er zes boeken over, waaronder 'De lengte van een oceaan' (2020) en 'De laatste walvis' (2024). Daarnaast maakte hij ook verschillende documentaires en startte er de podcast 'Björn in the USA'.

Björn koos de volgende vijf films:
