Het Eerste Internationaal Filmgebeuren van Gent werd opgericht in 1974 door Ben Ter Elst van Studio Skoop en Dirk De Meyer van de universitaire Filmclub. Begin jaren 80 werd de organisatie verder uitgebouwd door Jacques Dubrulle en sindsdien ontwikkelde het festival zich tot één van de meest prominente Europese filmevenementen. Elk jaar in oktober stelt het festival ruim 100 langspeelfilms en 30 kortfilms voor uit de gehele wereld. De afgelopen jaren wist het festival een publiek van ruim 100.000 toeschouwers aan te trekken.

The First International Film Event in Ghent was founded in 1974 by Ben Ter Elst of Studio Skoop and Dirk De Meyer of the university Film Club. Jacques Dubrulle further expanded the organization in the early 1980s and, since then, the festival has developed into one of the most prominent European film events. Every year in October the festival presents over 100 feature films and 30 short films from around the world. In recent years, the festival has attracted an audience of more than 100,000 spectators.

Go and watch 'Mumbo' (4+) on the big screen!

When the little hippo Mumbo grows to giant size, he has to go on a dangerous journey with his three friends to find the witch Baba Yaga so she can turn him small again. Based on Jakob Martin Strid’s children’s book, this adventure might make Mumbo small again, but a whole lot bigger on the inside.

'La Gradiva', the winner of the Grand Prix at the 53rd edition of Film Fest Gent, is now out in Belgian cinemas! ✨

The spellbinding feature debut by cinematographer Marine Atlan follows a group of French final-year students on a school trip to Naples and Pompeii. Friendships, desire and sexuality shift and collide as Atlan captures the intensity, vulnerability and occasional cruelty of life on the cusp of adulthood.

Our 53rd edition official opening film 'Coward' is now showing in Belgian cinemas! 🎬

Lukas Dhont's new film follows young soldiers trying to keep up their morale in the trenches during the First World War.

It's 1917 when Pierre (Emmanuel Macchia) meets Francis (Valentin Campagne), who decides to lift the spirits of his comrades by putting together a theatre show. While the violence continues, both men try to find ways to escape the brutality of war, even if only for a moment.

This was Film Fest Gent 2026! Now that the last film is finished and the red carpet has gone back into storage, there's only one thing left to do: give a huge thank you to all film makers, sponsors, collaborators and volunteers, and to everyone who visited the festival this year. 🧡

Film Fest Gent 2027 will take place from 6 to 17 October 2027.
