🫏 78 rescued donkeys. Every one with a story of survival — and a second chance to heal.

At Starting Over, our partner sanctuary in Israel, 78 rescued donkeys are learning what safety feels like. Many arrived with deep physical and psychological wounds — from abuse, trauma and neglect. Thanks to your support, they now have what they were so long denied: care, patience, and the time to heal.

At the heart of the sanctuary is the Hope Complex — an intensive-care space for the donkeys who need the most. This month it was busy with life in every direction.

Arrivals needing extra care:
🫏 Frail older jennies came in for special feeding, dental treatment and close supervision.
🍼 Five mother-and-foal pairs moved in — including a young daughter bravely recovering from injuries caused by severe abuse, and making real progress.
🤍 A timid, partially-sighted jenny arrived to settle gently into a quiet, safe space of her own.

And the victories — donkeys well enough to move on:
✈️ Two donkeys completed quarantine ahead of flights to Europe, where forever homes are waiting for them.
🐣 One moved to the maternity area and gave birth to a healthy baby girl.
✅ Others graduated after finishing dental treatment and wound care — recovered, and ready for the next chapter.

Not every story is easy. One expectant jenny lost her foal, stillborn, and is being tenderly cared for as she recovers. Healing isn’t always a straight line — but at Starting Over, no donkey faces the hard days alone.

🤍 In memory of Bruna — rescued from a brick kiln, and loved for the rest of her life.

This month, our partner Animal Nepal said goodbye to Bruna, one of the first donkeys ever to call their sanctuary home. She passed away unexpectedly in early August, after a brief illness.

Bruna’s early years were spent labouring in a brick kiln — the harsh, relentless work that so many working animals endure. But rescue gave her a second life. At the sanctuary, she finally knew what she’d always deserved: care, comfort, companionship, and freedom. She lived out her years safe, and she was deeply loved.

Her closest friend was a donkey named Sangeet. Donkeys form powerful bonds, and they grieve — so when Bruna died, the team watched over Sangeet carefully. We’re comforted to share that another donkey, Raamri, has taken him under her wing, and he’s doing well. Even in loss, the herd takes care of its own. 💛

Bruna’s story is the whole of AAA’s mission in one life: an animal who gave her labour in hardship, and was met at last with kindness. That second chapter — the safe, dignified years — is what your support makes possible.

And life goes on at the sanctuary. This month also brought a group of final-year veterinary students for hands-on training in equine welfare, and a steady stream of visitors there to meet the animals and learn — more scratches, more cuddles, and (the residents’ favourite) more treats. 🫏

🐴 Hit by a train. Pulled from traffic with a torn leg. Rescued, blind, from a city street. For the working horses, ponies and donkeys of India, the streets are relentless — and last month, help reached 810 of them.

Through our partner Friendicoes, Animal Aid Abroad supports an Equine Mobile Clinic that goes straight to the animals who need it — the horses, ponies and donkeys who haul and labour through the chaotic streets of India, where traffic, trains, wire and sheer exhaustion take a daily toll.

In July alone, that clinic was a lifeline for 810 working equines. 🚑

The injuries tell the story of their world: a forelimb sliced open by fencing wire. A massive wound sutured after a train accident. A leg torn in a collision with a vehicle. Alongside the trauma came colic, dental work, deworming, vaccinations and farrier care — the quiet, steady treatment that keeps a working animal alive and out of pain.

And three animals were lifted off the streets entirely: an abandoned donkey, a pony injured by a train, and a blind pony — all carried to safety and shelter. 🫏

🩺 Behind every wound cleaned and every animal eased out of pain, there's a pair of skilled, steady hands. Today, we honour them.

This Friday, October 9, is World Vet Nurse Day — and at Animal Aid Abroad, we're extending our deepest thanks to the veterinary nurses and para-vets who are the beating heart of our partner teams around the world.

In many of the communities where we work, a vet nurse or a para-vet is the first — and sometimes the only — care a working animal will ever receive. They are the ones who:

🩹 Clean and dress the saddle sores and harness wounds
🫏 Hold a frightened donkey steady through treatment
💉 Deworm, vaccinate, and nurse animals back to strength
🐫 Assist through long days of mobile clinics and surgeries
📚 Teach owners how to prevent the next injury
🚐 Travel rough, remote distances to reach animals no one else can

🎉 20 years. One promise that has never changed: the animals who work deserve care.

In 2007, Animal Aid Abroad began with a simple conviction — and two decades later, it still drives everything we do. This year, we celebrate 20 years of putting working animals first. 🐴🐫🫏

From the very beginning, AAA was built to run differently. We are 100% volunteer-led, with no paid salaries, and we keep our running costs as low as we possibly can — so that as much of every dollar as possible goes exactly where it belongs: straight to the animals. That principle hasn't changed in 20 years, and it never will.

And we're still growing. We're proud to announce two new partnerships opening our next chapter:
🐎 JAAN (Jakarta Animal Aid Network) — beginning this month, helping the carriage horses of Jakarta.
🌴 Animals Fiji — from January 2027, extending our care to working animals in Fiji.

🌍 Today is World Animal Day — and we're thinking of the ones who carry the world on their backs.

On every continent, animals work. The donkey hauling water before dawn. The camel crossing desert sands with trade. The horse and mule carrying the harvest down mountain paths. The elephant, the ox, the yak — pulling, ploughing, transporting, labouring through heat, cold and hardship most of us never see.

They are the quiet engine beneath millions of families' survival. And far too often, they do it in pain — without care, without rest, without anyone to turn to.

Animal Aid Abroad exists for them.

Our mission is simple: front-line help for working animals in need, wherever they are. 🫏 A new partnership. 31 animals cared for. 40 humane harnesses built. And a whole lot of donkey kisses.

This past month, Animal Aid Abroad welcomed one of our newest African partners — NAWA, the Namibian Animal Welfare Association — and together we got straight to work for the working donkeys and horses of rural Namibia.

Meet Rose, a 10-year-old mare who had just given birth. When she arrived at the Groot Aub practice, she couldn't walk at all — struck down by a painful muscle-cramping condition. Her owner, Markus, has brought her back faithfully, four times now, for the medicine she needs. Today Rose is steady on three legs and growing stronger — and we're hopeful that last leg is close behind. 🐴

That's what a new partnership makes possible on the ground, from day one.

The month in numbers:
🫏 31 working equines cared for across Witvlei and Groot Aub.
🧵 40 humane harnesses and 40 bridles made — plus four new prototype yokes already proving they prevent the neck injuries these animals so often suffer.
👩‍🏫 22 adults and countless children taught how to care for, handle, and respect working donkeys.
🐴 8 horses given urgently-needed hoof care by NAWA's farrier, Johan.
➕ A new horse specialist hired and trained to spot injuries from poor equipment — and medicines, vaccines and wound-care supplies restocked, all through AAA funding.

These donkeys and horses carry entire rural households through their days. With NAWA newly on the ground and supporters like you behind them, they're getting care, better equipment, and dignity — much of it for the very first time.

🫏 She was wounded by the very tool meant to help her work. So we're teaching her village to build a better one.

This July, Animal Aid Abroad — through our partner LSPCA in Lilongwe, Malawi — treated injured working donkeys and tackled the reason they get hurt in the first place.

In the community of Mponela, the team met a donkey with a deep, raw wound worn into the crest of her neck. The cause: a rough wooden yoke grinding against her skin, hour after hour, as she hauled heavy loads with no padded harness to protect her. Her wound was cleaned, disinfected, and treated to heal — and then something quietly powerful happened. Her injury became the lesson. The team used her case to show other farmers exactly how poor equipment does this damage, and how to stop it.

That's the heart of this work: treat the suffering in front of you, then prevent the next one.

The month in numbers:
🫏 74 working donkeys examined across mobile clinics in Kanjedza and Mponela.
💉 55 donkeys treated with wound care, antibiotics, and parasite control; 19 given full health checks.
🧵 In Mitundu, donkey owners learned to build their own well-fitted harnesses from cheap, local materials — spreading the load evenly so the wounds never form.
📚 Every clinic doubled as a class: how to spot a wound early, fit a harness right, rest an injured animal, manage its workload.

These donkeys are the engine of rural households — hauling harvest, farm inputs, water, and building materials through long, punishing days. When their equipment cuts into them, they work through the pain because they have no choice. The care that ends that pain — and the training that prevents it — is given freely, because of supporters like you.

🐫 674 animals helped in a single month in India.

This July, Animal Aid Abroad — through our partner Camel Rescue Centre (CRC) in India — brought free veterinary care, relief, and dignity to 674 working animals who had nowhere else to turn.

When Ramu's camel arrived at the Langariyawas site, she was carrying two kinds of pain: a raw saddle sore worn into her back by the work she does every day, and a clouded, injured eye. The team cleaned and dressed the wound, started antibiotics to stop infection, and began treatment to save her sight. She's now healing — and being followed up until she's whole again.

She was one of many.

The month in numbers:
🐫 223 camels treated for wounds, infections, and painful conditions.
🐐 451 other working animals — horses, goats, cows, dogs and sheep — treated, dewormed, and vaccinated.
🦷 A camel who could barely eat, freed from the pain of an inflamed mouth.
🐃 A buffalo released from a heavy tick infestation that was slowly wearing her down.

These are the animals who carry families through their days — hauling, ploughing, pulling, working in the heat. When they suffer, a whole household feels it. And because of supporters like you, the care that eases that suffering is given freely, to owners who could never otherwise afford it.

🐴 68 animals. One month. A partnership in Colombia that refused to look away.

In July, Animal Aid Abroad — through our Colombian partner, Namigni Animal Sanctuary — delivered veterinary care, emergency rescue, and lifelong sanctuary to 68 working and rescued animals across Cundinamarca, Colombia.

Among them: a newborn Spanish fighting-cow calf, rejected by her mother and left to die on a breeding farm. Frozen colostrum and round-the-clock warming pulled her through. Today, she's thriving. 🐮

The month in numbers:
✅ 27 working equines treated at a mobile clinic — 19 mules, 6 horses, a pony and a donkey — dewormed, given vitamins, and screened for hidden conditions, including a heart murmur the owner never knew his mare had.
✅ 4 disabled ponies, plus donkeys, sheep, pot-bellied pigs and 22 chickens rescued from slaughter and responsibly rehomed.
✅ A retired mare discarded by a riding school, and an unwanted donkey and mule — all given the dignified futures they'd been denied.
✅ 20+ rescued donkeys, horses and Spanish fighting bulls held steady through brutal El Niño rains, with extra feed added as cold and soaring prices bit hard.
