The AEC is committed to making voting more accessible for all Australians. As a Community Electoral Participation Officer (CEPO), your knowledge and expertise will help the AEC to deliver election services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in remote communities.
Job Summary
Community Electoral Participation Officers (CEPOs) are community-based members engaged on a casual basis by the AEC to assist in delivering community engagement activities, through the Indigenous Electoral Participation Program (IEPP).
A CEPO is the point of contact within a community or organisation in their local area or region. They assist community members to enrol to vote and update their enrolments, deliver election education messages, and support electoral participation. They also provide support to AEC and/or IEPP partners during community engagement activities in their local area or region.
For federal election events, a CEPO may also be required to provide support to remote mobile polling teams in their local area or region. CEPOs may also be required to undertake additional election services, if reasonable and as required.

• Ability to communicate and engage with a diverse range of people in the community
• Demonstrated understanding of, or the ability to quickly learn electoral concepts to translate or communicate to the broader community
Duties
With support from AEC staff, the Community Electoral Participation Officer will:
• Build and maintain relationships with community members to help increase awareness of elections and how to participate
• Work with the AEC Remote Area Polling teams during the election period
• Assist AEC staff using local knowledge, networks, and languages by:
o Encouraging local electors to enrol and vote
o distribute a range of electoral information material
o assist electors in understanding the process of how to cast a formal vote
o check the accuracy of the electoral roll in their community
• Promote election participation to the community and raise awareness of when and where voting will take place
• Recruit local assistants to support the CEPO role when the RVS team is in the community
• Maintain a safe work environment by taking all reasonable steps to ensure compliance with Work Health and Safety requirements, including Covid 19 plans
• Provide the AEC with feedback on community’s enrolments experience
• Other activities as requested to assist the AEC to provide election services to communities
• Keep the workplace safe, including making sure Work Health and Safety measures and COVID-19 plans are followed
• CEPO’s may be required to assist with the delivery of remote voter services

• provide training and support
• pay you for the time you spend training
• cover any costs associated with getting to training, such as travel and parking costs
Politically sensitive position
This is a politically sensitive position. These means that you can’t be seen to be, or be active in, political affairs. It’s important that Community Electoral Participation Officers are politically neutral.
Mandatory requirements
• Australian citizen aged 18 years or over.
• Full COVID-19 vaccination or approved exemption.
• Satisfactory completion of an Australian Federal Police criminal history check, and where relevant a Working with Children and Vulnerable People Check.
