Vale HV - Harvey
The Hooded Plover volunteers of the Fleurieu Peninsula were saddened when our favourite Hooded Plover HV (aka Harvey the Hero) was found dead on his beach at Port Willunga on 17th July this year. HV was an exceptional plover; he made the Blanche Point beach his home and, with his partner, fledged 7 chicks. He was one of the most successful plover parents on the Fleurieu Peninsula. The pair taught the Hooded Plover volunteers so much about Hooded Plover parenting skills; they endured baking sun and rain, foxes, dogs and inquisitive people. Harvey saved a chick from a kestrel strike, and, although the chick was injured, it fledged along with its nest mate. Famously, the pair saved eggs washed away by the tide on three occasions, re-incubated them, and hatched a chick.
Harvey was tagged as an adult at Snapper Point, Aldinga, in Jan 2013 and moved to Port Willunga in 2015. Little did we know what an amazing bird he would become. At the time of his death, he was at least 13 years old and weakened by age and hunger; off leash dogs had been chasing plovers on the days surrounding his death.
Harvey showed us how to be a great Hooded Plover father and partner and made Port Willunga one of the most successful breeding locations to date. He was our favourite plover and our teacher.
We will miss seeing his distinctive orange tag, and his flights on the beach to say “hello” at Port Willunga beach.
R.I.P. Harvey, you were a true hero.

💚 Got a project that could help wildlife recover after the Deep Creek and Nangkita-Tooperang bushfires earlier this year?

Grants of up to $10,000 are now available for activities such as fence repair, w**d control, habitat restoration, erosion control, feral/pest animal control, research and monitoring, all aimed at supporting the recovery and resilience of fire-impacted habitats and native flora, particularly threatened species in South Australia.
