Decades long fight ends with Wuthathi back on Country
By Christine Howes

For the first time in more than 100 years, Wuthathi families came together on their Country – on the far north-eastern coast of the Cape York Peninsula in Queensland – to celebrate what generations of their ancestors have fought for since their removal in the early 1900s.

More than 250 people, many visiting their Country for the first time, came home, taking up more than 100 campsites for families from Lockhart River, Northern Peninsula Area, Cairns, Townsville and beyond for a day of dance, celebration and traditional feasting last month.

It was a massive logistical effort into an extremely remote and isolated area that was a complete success, according to Wuthathi Aboriginal Corporation chair Keron Murray and Wuthathi Tribal Elders Council chair Johnson Chippendale.

They said it was a day well-spent, celebrating and honouring the journey home for Wuthathi people, from removal in the early 1900s to their first return in the 1950s, and everything that had been achieved up to this point of returning to Country.

β€œWe have celebrated and honoured a vision that was set years ago by our old people and followed through, from generation to generation,” Mr Murray said.

β€œThe goal was always to secure land, so it was a very long-standing fight for our Country.
