Volunteer for Knox partnered with Coonara Community House today to host "Lights, Camera, Friendship" movie day at the Knox Community Arts Centre to celebrate the Knox Seniors Festival! Our movie Saving Mr Banks was enjoyed by all!

Thank you to Eddie Atacador, the Victorian Seniors Festival Ambassador who is also the president of the Knox Community Chess Enthusiasts - KCCE, an extremely popular chess group who meet at Westfield Knox and Rowville Library to engage the community in the game of chess! Eddie spoke to guests about the importance of community connection.

Also thank to to Knox City Council for funding our event today. Their ongoing support for our Seniors is so wonderful to see. Sheridan Stone, Social Connections Specialist from Knox Council also officially opened our event!

Lastly and most importantly thank you to our vibrant Seniors in Knox. It's great to see you all active, having fun and getting involved in the community. It was great to talk with you all about volunteering options and Coonara programs!

Calling all organisations looking to build Aboriginal Cultural Competency! Knox City Council and the Koorie Heritage Trust are hosting a FREE online training session on the 10th of November.

This session is perfect for organisations who may not have regular contact with Aboriginal peoples or communities, but are interested in building their knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal culture and people from an Aboriginal perspective.

We have a very special volunteer opportunity in Rowville!

HammondCare have a female client living with dementia and are currently looking for a female volunteer for companionship and social engagement. The client loves sewing, used to draw and enjoys watching sports on TV.

Someone with previous Dimentia experience would be wonderful however not expected. Training and support will be provided.

Extremely flexible with days and times that suit you. The clients daughter is looking for some respite and would appreciate any help.

We are continuing the fun with our Teddy Bear Project at the Coonara Community House 50th Anniversary Festival on November 7th from 12-5pm.

Following on from the Volunteering Expo in May this year. The community were invited to pick a teddy, choose 3 knitted items of clothing and dress and name the bear! 120 Teddies were later donated to local not-for-profit organisations to give to children in need of a smile.

*First in only 100 bears 🐻

We also are taking part in the Coonara history exhibition! For those that didn't know Coonara Community House is where our Volunteer Resource Centre is based! So come and pick up some information on volunteering in Knox!

Huge thank you to the Coonara Sunny room knitters for knitting over 500 pieces of Teddy clothing. Volunteering at it's best!

On Friday we had the pleasure of connecting a lovely group of ladies from the Balmoral Retirement Village in Wantirna to Mahjong Connections to learn the game of Mahjong!

Mahjong Connections is a volunteer run not-for-profit organisation who offer Mahjong games at Westfield Knox Community Space (outside Knox Library)every Wednesday morning from 10 - 1pm. Christine and her team of volunteers offer more than just a game but they help reduce social isolation, loneliness and bring joy into people's lives!

The Balmoral ladies loved learning, enjoyed a laugh and can now teach other residents the game!!

Thank you to Christine and Rachel for taking the time to share your love and passion for Mahjong.

Mahjong Connections is supported by Knox Council who believe in the value of community connection.

The Champion- Community Hub and Meeting Place in our Neighbourhood Community Garden in Bayswater is a welcoming and inclusive space where people can connect, learn new skills and enjoy the social, health and wellbeing benefits of spending time together in the garden.

This term is all about the garden! It’s a great opportunity to share gardening skills, swap ideas and connect with other gardening enthusiasts in a friendly and relaxed environment.

All Term 4 sessions are free and open to people of all ages and backgrounds. Check out the program it's packed with amazing activities!

This week is Dementia Awareness Week and we were invited to attend The Haven Day Centre bi-annual art show.

Dementia Week aims to reduce stigma, build understanding, bust the myth that memory loss is a normal part of aging, and encourage people to seek support early.

The Haven Day Centre is a registered not-for-profit organisation with Volunteer for Knox and we have referred many amazing volunteers here over the years. From students studying to individuals wanting to give back to the community. It was wonderful to see the beautiful artwork and how the volunteers make such a huge impact 🙌

The Haven Day Centre provides social and mental stimulation, recreational activity, promotes mobility and an opportunity to meet others in a social, structured and supervised program.
