This week is National Road Safety Week across Australia.

At Hamlyn Terrace Fire Station, we see the impact of road crashes far too often. Many of these incidents are preventable.

✅ Slow down.
✅ Put the phone away.
✅ Wear your seatbelt.
✅ Never drive tired or under the influence.

A small decision behind the wheel can change lives forever.

Drive so others survive.

If you have ever wondered how fire investigators work to determine the cause and origin of fires, this is a great example of how it is done.

A huge thank you to Raymond Terrace Fire & Rescue NSW and Station Officer Gordon for allowing us to share this footage and insight into the incredible work carried out by the Fire Investigation and Research Unit (FIRU).

Xenos, one of Fire and Rescue NSW’s specialised ignitable liquid detection canines, demonstrated how these highly trained dogs can detect even the smallest traces of accelerants across large fire scenes. Their work plays a critical role in supporting fire investigations across NSW alongside firefighters, police and the Coroner’s Office.

These canines and investigators are an important part of determining how fires start, helping identify suspicious fires and supporting community safety through fire prevention and investigation.

An amazing capability and a great insight into a side of firefighting many people never get to see. And of course, Xenos stole the show.

Today we pause to remember and honour the service and sacrifice of all those who have served our country.

On Anzac Day, we reflect on the courage, mateship and dedication shown by the men and women of our armed forces, past and present.

We also recognise the families who have supported them and the legacy they have left for future generations.

Lest we forget.

Yesterday our crew had the chance to visit the children at Goodstart Early Learning Woongarrah and what a great morning it was.

We shared some key fire safety messages with the kids, including:

• Calling 000 in an emergency
• Stop, cover, drop and roll
• Get down low and go, go, go

The children were engaged, asked great questions and showed a real interest in staying safe.

It was also a highlight seeing their excitement when they got up close to the fire truck.

Thanks again for having us. We look forward to seeing you again soon.
