Day 6
Narrandera NSW to Dargo VIC
Distance: 463km
Sealed: 399km
Unsealed: 64km
Today is “In memory of” day. This could be in memory of someone you may have lost from Cancer or someone who is currently battling this disease or it can basically mean anything you want it to. It was a day of reflection, memories, hope and prosperity.
Far out it’s cold !!!!!! The coldest we’ve ever been so far. Was very hard to pack away everything this morning as our fingers almost had frost bite.
Went down for breakfast, very similar to all the other days. Tina lined up for almost 25 mins for Tea which she skulled down in record time. Got our lunches and packed everything ready to head out.
Nothing exciting happened at briefing, just everyone standing outside, finding a warm sunny spot trying to defrost.
Tina started the drive today and poor Rae had no idea what was in-store for her 🤭
The frost was thick and heavy on the way out. It was quite a slow morning on the road with buddy group after buddy group trailing behind one another.
We drove through Lockhart and headed to Albury which would be our first stop for the day.
We had almost an hour in Albury to look around, shop or do whatever we wanted.
Guess what we found? KFC
How could we resist! So we stopped in and got a little go bucket for the trip👌🏼
We regrouped at the Bunnings in Albury and headed on our way towards Lake Hume, the river, which is the boarder between NSW and VIC.
It was amazing! Stupid is as Stupid does got the drone out for a family pic and then back in the car and on the road again.
We then stopped at Mitta Mitta, there was a cute little shop and pub there. There was also a beautiful river running along the back of the pub. The water was absolutely freezing 🥶
The team enjoyed a drink and were ready for the next leg of the drive.
The lovely lady in the shop warned Tina about the windy roads ahead 😳 awesome!! Tina continued to drive to avoid getting car sick along the way.
For 2 and a half hours we drove on the most windiest roads, up, down, around and around and around we went. And just when we thought we were there, we’d go up another steep mountain and then back down again. Tina moaned, groaned, almost cried (a few times) had tantrums and moaned and groaned some more.
We FINALLY made it to Omeo and we detoured up to the lookout where we could see Mount Kosciusko.
Everyone was asking how we went, how was the drive? Rae’s response, “do you know what’s worse than the windy roads, sitting in the car with Tina listening to her whinge about the windy roads”
It was freezing at the lookout so Tina sat in the car stuffing her face with a bread roll, 99% sure she’d see it again after the next part of the trip with more windy roads ahead 🤮 Rae desperately trying to find a toilet area, but there were way too many people at the lookout so we headed back on the road, praying that one of the boys would call a code yellow 🤞🏼
Rae’s prayers were answered, back on dirt road the cars were starting to back up again so everyone jumped out for a toilet break.
After all the windy roads, the Twiins brakes were getting a bit soft and a few klm’s further down the road we got a call over the radio that they had lost their brakes and electronics so we all pulled over again to let them cool down.
We happened to pull over on an emergency brake fail hill. The Bearly Running boys eyes lit up! The drone came out and everyone had their phones ready to film. Jackson took off and headed up the hill making it all the way up the top. Did a donut and came flying back down 🤭. Crazy.
Not crazy enough though cause Rae was even thinking about asking for a ride up the hill and back. But after deciding to chose life, she passed on the opportunity. Stupid is came up with a plan, they would lead and report back on the conditions ahead, hills, grades, braking etc and the TWIINS would follow with Bearly Running team behind them incase their brakes failed and they could gently catch them.
The TWIINS car made it safely into camp. We arrive in Dargo around 8pm. Tina was desperate for a room for the night so ran to the pub and asked if there were any availabilities. There were not, so the decision was made that they would BOTH sleep in the car tonight. The final night. There was no chance either of them were setting up the tent only to have to pull it down the next morning covered in ice etc.
The line up for dinner was long, very long. But was totally worth it. The selection was amazing and we had full little bellies again. The fire was raging, more games were played, desserts were eaten (by Tina only of course) and bed was calling. Sorry, the car was calling.
Upon returning to the car, we remembered Rae’s hot water bottles. That was an event in itself. Rae tried to give Tina 3rd degree burns during the process. “Here Tina, can you hold this please” ………forgot to mention that the bottle was only half full and the lid was off, Tina threw it over her arm (it was the 1metre long hot water bottle) and sat down. Within a few seconds it got hot, very hot and Tina jumped up and screamed “ah its open, it burns”
2 staff members walked past giving her a weird look, Tina in shock and not sure what just happened, looking around for the lid, Rae returned reaching for the hot water bottle with a smile not realising what just happened.
So turns out it takes an hour and 4 people to boil a kettle, Rae thought Tina could see what was happening and knew it was open and half full, Tina did not lol
Thank goodness for thick thermal tights, 3rd degree burns were narrowly missed and the car was calling once again.
After moving everything, shuffling everything, twisting, turning, laughing, more shuffling and turning we were asleep.
