Hi Broomies! 🌱 We’re the Kimberley Sustainable Food Garden crew, and we’re pleased to share our beautiful fresh produce at the Broome Courthouse Markets tomorrow!

Our garden is a collaboration between The Skill Engineer, Job Pathways and VTS-Training RTO 51843, supporting job seekers in Broome to build practical skills in horticulture and sustainable food production!

Our short film MOHAMAD has been selected for the 2026 Central Coast Film Festival

The film follows Syrian-born Mohamad and his young family’s journey as refugees settling in Gosford, NSW. It also shines a light on the incredible volunteers at Coastal CRISP who helped the family find a home, access services and education, and build connections in their new community.

We’re proud to celebrate this achievement with our IN MY SHOES youth team. Thank you to everyone who shared their stories, time and creativity, and to The Skill Engineer, Blackmagic Design and the Digi Van team for bringing the film to life.

Last week, we visited Elizabeth, a Year 11 student from Mount St Benedict College studying Commercial Cookery, during her first work placement at Lusso Tapas Rouse Hill. It was fantastic to see her working alongside the chefs, gaining hands-on experience and learning from a team willing to share their skills, time and knowledge.

For a young person taking their first steps into hospitality, this experience matters. It connects classroom learning with the pace and expectations of a professional kitchen, creating opportunities to build confidence, develop practical skills and explore a future in the industry.

Lusso Tapas has supported our Work Placement Program since 2021. Their ongoing commitment shows the value of lasting partnerships between local employers, schools and The Skill Enginee, giving students meaningful opportunities while helping nurture the next generation of hospitality professionals!

A huge thank you to the Lusso team, and to the local restaurants and employers who open their doors and give young people a red-hot crack at the industry. Your contribution reaches well beyond the placement itself. 💛

A favourite outing, three years running! 🐊💚

For the past three years, the Malcolm Douglas Crocodile Park has welcomed young people from our e-scooter and e-bike program for an industry visit, and it’s always a highlight for everyone.

Each visit is a chance to learn more about the tourism industry, the work that goes on behind the scenes and, of course, those magnificent saltwater crocodiles, freshies and gators!

We recently dropped in to see Annie and the lovely Valerie, the late Malcolm Douglas’s wife, to say a heartfelt thank you for making this opportunity possible year after year!!

Thank you to the whole team for welcoming our young people with such warmth and sharing your time, knowledge and passion. We’re so grateful for your ongoing support.

Every young person deserves the opportunity to see where their skills could take them. 💛

Meet Ella from Wyong High School, who is studying a Certificate III in Fitness as part of her HSC and gaining valuable industry experience through work placement at Planet Fitness.

A big thank you to General Manager Sam Wainwright and the Planet Fitness Tuggerah team, who have welcomed fitness students since 2021. Their ongoing support helps open doors for young people right here on the Central Coast.

At The Skill Engineer, our Work Placement program connects schools, students and local employers to create these opportunities. Behind every placement are relationships built over time, local knowledge and people committed to giving young people a strong start.

Through The Skill Engineer’s Work Placement program, Wyong High School students Meriemm and Isabella put their TAFE NSW tourism studies into practice at the Central Coast Marine Discovery Centre (CCMDC).

During the busy school holiday period, the students made a valuable contribution, with the Centre describing them as fantastic additions to the team and a huge helping hand!

Thank you to the Marine Discovery Centre for providing such a welcoming and supportive environment for young people to learn.

This is the value of local work placement - connecting schools, students and employers to build skills, explore career pathways and contribute to our Central Coast community.

The Digi Van has hit the road for some on-Country creativity!

Daniel and Cody travelled 260km from Broome to join the Marlamanu crew for a week of music-making, rapping, film and photography.

Through our collaboration with KRED Enterprises, Skilled Creative is bringing the Digi Van to Marlamanu’s Aboriginal-led, on-Country school, set on a working pastoral station.

Here, young people learn alongside Aboriginal mentors, connecting with culture, Country and practical skills in an environment built on trust, responsibility and respect.

The enthusiasm is already there, one keen student even gave up an evening of fishing to jump into the van and get started! We can’t wait to see the stories and sounds that come out of this week.

A big thank you to KRED Enterprises and the Marlamanu crew for welcoming us, and to Gro Foundation, Shire of Broome, Broome International Airport and Woodside Energy for making this possible.

Eight young people, eight weeks of hard work, and so much to be proud of!!

A huge congratulations to Shane, Cuzeem, Fran, Elijah, Murphy, Layla, Johnathon and Sheldon, who graduated yesterday from our Second Gear program!!

From building custom e-scooters to learning new skills and tackling challenges together, you’ve shown what can happen when you give something a go and keep going. We hope you’re feeling as proud of yourselves as we are of you. 💛

Over eight weeks, our participants developed practical engineering skills, confidence and job readiness, supported by an apprentice master and youth mentors. Along the way, they took part in White Card, First Aid and VTS’s Pave the Way literacy and numeracy training, and explored local workplaces to discover the opportunities here in Broome.

Since 2023, The Skill Engineer has supported more than 100 young people, and behind every group is a community helping them succeed!!

A heartfelt thank you to our incredible team, Shirley, Brad and Rachel, for the patience, encouragement and care you bring to this program!

Let’s put our hands together for the firies from Airservices Australia at Broome International Airport! A big thank you to Aviation Fire Fighter Jess Marwick and the entire team for welcoming our Second Gear participants and giving them an insight into careers in aviation and emergency services.

Does anyone in the Broome community have an old air compressor, a couple of 44-gallon drums or any other scrap metal they would be happy to donate?

Our talented Second Gear crew will transform the materials into metal sculptures while continuing to build their welding, fabrication and design skills.
