The National Standards for Volunteer Involvement are a best practice framework to guide volunteer involvement. They are an essential resource for all organisations and groups that engage volunteers.

Congratulations to Warrigal and Taronga Conservation Society Australia who have each achieved accreditation as an Exemplary Volunteer Involving Organisation (EVIO).

At the conference, Gemma Rygate, CEO The Centre for Volunteering, presented certificates to Michelle Chate from Warrigal and to Danni Alty from Taronga Conservation Society Australia.

It’s great to see so many phenomenal speakers at this year’s Volunteering NSW State Conference, including our panel on Volunteer Leadership and Empowerment.

Panelists this year: Kellie May from NSW Department of Communities and Justice; Danni Alty from Taronga Conservation Society Australia; and Stacy Jacobs from PCYC Cessnock and Cessnock Family Support Service.

Leadership is vital to healthy volunteer programs and teams. Some key ideas shared by the panel:

“Some of the best inventions come out of failure. Nine out of ten times you are going to learn more from the failures. Giving yourself time to reflect is where growth happens…. You’ve got to create the space for change.” (Kellie May)

“It’s about channeling the passion and the creativity, rather than containing it. There are over 40 volunteer roles at Taronga. We allow people to express exactly which role they are interested in.” (Danni Alty)

“In terms of succession planning – find someone who can shadow you. We’ve all had so many opportunities. Where are the opportunities you are providing for others to develop their skills?” (Stacy Jacobs)

“Look outside of your leadership box for leaders who inspire you. It’s ok if you don’t know something – that opens you up to growth and opportunity.” (Kellie May)

Jo Scard from Fifty Acres presented this afternoon on Making Government Engagement part of your Leadership Toolkit.

Jo says that volunteer organisations are vital to helping governments understand how policy decisions affect people in practice.

“While systems such as data, reporting, consultations etc are important, they do not always capture the immediacy or complexity of lived experience.

“Volunteer organisations are deeply connected to their local communities – local stories help policymakers move beyond abstract policy discussion and understand how decisions affect real people in practical ways.”
