If the negative impacts of climate change affect everyone and do not discriminate by race, culture, or community, then everyone should be part of the conversations and forums that shape the policies guiding us toward a better climate future.

Around the world, people are already facing rising temperatures, flooding, food shortages, displacement, and growing economic pressures linked to climate change. Yet many of the communities most affected, including First Nations peoples and racially, culturally, and linguistically diverse groups, are still not adequately represented where key climate decisions are being made. Real and lasting solutions require the voices, experiences, and leadership of those living these realities every day.

Because building a fair and sustainable future means making sure no one is left out of the decisions that affect us all.

Multicultural Leadership Initiative (MLI) was founded on the principle of uplifting the voices of racially, culturally, and linguistically diverse people to shape solutions for some of humanity’s most pressing challenges, especially climate change. We are not-for-profit and cross-partisan in our approach.

As we step into the year of the Fire Horse, this is a critical year to influence Australia's role in climate leadership that is ambitious, just and inclusive.

MLI is inviting expressions of interest for additional Board Directors to join our Board to help accelerate and amplify our mission to build an inclusive climate safe future where no-one is left behind.

Are you energetic and passionate with a burning desire to increase diversity of voices in the climate movement? Do you have skills in finance, fundraising or governance?

At the Multicultural Leadership Initiative, we know that culture, language, faith, migration history, identity, and intergenerational knowledge all shape how communities engage with climate change. These perspectives aren’t adjacent to climate action, they are central to it.

Australia is one of the most culturally and linguistically diverse countries in the world. Yet, despite more than one in three Australians identifying as culturally and linguistically diverse, over half of the climate movement does not reflect this diversity.

That needs to change.

Meaningful engagement doesn’t happen by accident. It requires time, intention, care, and investment. When we celebrate and uplift diverse voices, we build stronger climate leadership, broader public support, and the political will we need for more ambitious action.

Now more than ever, we must commit to inclusive climate solutions that reflect the communities they aim to serve.

📣 We’ve just launched our annual survey exploring multicultural perspectives on climate change. This research will help strengthen understanding, inform better policy, and support more inclusive climate engagement across Australia.

It’s been a month since leaders from across Australia gathered at Parliament House for the Climate Crisis Summit, bringing together voices from emergency services, health, community, research and multicultural organisations.

For us at MLI, it reflected something we see everyday in our work:

The communities most impacted by a changing climate are often the ones carrying deep knowledge, resilience and lived experience.

At the summit, Greg McConville (National Secretary, United Firefighters Union) shared what frontline workers are seeing firsthand:
🔥 longer bushfire seasons
🔥 more extreme weather events
🔥 growing pressure on emergency and health systems
🔥 challenges with resources, equipment and response capacity

His message was a powerful reminder that preparedness, coordination and strong leadership are essential to keeping communities safe.

As an organisation grounded in cultural understanding, MLI remains committed to uplifting the voices of frontline workers and multicultural communities — voices that help shape how Australia adapts and prepares for the future.

Here’s Greg’s insight from the summit.

➡️ Follow MLI for more leadership perspectives and cross-sector reflections.

Thank you to .sudharshan for attending this Climate Crisis Summit as Director of Leadership Engagement of
and a huge thank you to Larissa Baldwin-Roberts and the team from for organising and convening these organisations to attend the summit.

Our impact grows through shared effort. Your support helps us continue creating spaces where multicultural leadership can thrive. We’ve been a little quiet on social media lately but that’s about to change.

Each month has been a big lift for our team, and we’re excited to start sharing more of what we’ve been building. We will be sharing the impact we’re creating but most importantly, sharing the stories of the multicultural leaders around Australia and the world who are showing us that sustainability and prosperity are key to cultivating a world generations after us will thank us for.

This is the conversation we are taking into COP30.

It is also the opportunity ahead as COP31 approaches.

If COP31 is hosted in the Australia-Pacific region, we hold a strategic advantage:

Australia is multicultural.

And multiculturalism, in practice, is multilateral reach.

We are connected to the world because the world lives here.

This is not branding. It is reality.

It is a platform for leadership that is needed for the Australian climate movement to be a credible global climate partners, should the world descend on our shores.

Good luck in Belém, and welcome (hopefully) to Australia soon.
