The South Australian State Emergency Service (SASES) is a volunteer-based emergency assistance and rescue service. Locally the Strathalbyn SES unit provides emergency assistance to the people in the Strathalbyn and surrounding areas 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Strathalbyn SES unit covers a broad area in the Fleurieu Peninsula including the regional towns of Strathalbyn, Meadows
, Kangarilla, Blackfellows Creek, Finniss, Milang, Clayton Bay, Langhorne Creek, Woodchester, and Macclesfield. In addition to local coverage the unit provides support during deployments to incidents elsewhere within South Australia and interstate. Strathalbyn SES unit responds to approximately 250 calls for assistance each year and works collaboratively with other emergency services and community. The units operational tasks are primarily road crash rescue, general rescue, land search, flood operations and storm damage, and extend to swiftwater rescue, vertical rescue and shoring.
