From Horses to Hardware: The Small Store Taking on the Big Leagues

Four years ago, David and Karena stepped into hardware retail with no industry experience and a vision to build something locals could trust.

Today, Brighton Hardware Hub Pty Ltd has been crowned Retail Store of the Year Under 2500sqm at the NTHA Vic/Tas Timber & Hardware Industry Awards.

The couple transformed the store by listening to customers, expanding product ranges and building a reputation around genuine service, honest advice and strong community support.

Their remarkable rise proves independent businesses can achieve extraordinary things when they put customers and community first.

Struggling to Find Reliable Factory Labour? Coastline Found a Solution

When local labour became harder to find, Coastline Frame & Truss turned to the PALM scheme — and the impact has gone beyond filling positions.

Four trainees from Papua New Guinea joined the business this year and are now completing their Certificate III in Timber and Wood Products Operations through NTHA Training (RTO #5343).

Production Manager Jack Dreger said the trainees have brought positivity, strong work ethic and energy into the workplace, helping strengthen the business every day.

Celebrating the Best of Timber & Hardware 2026

The 2026 Victorian and Tasmanian Timber & Hardware Industry Awards at Arts Centre Melbourne recognised excellence throughout the timber and hardware sector across two states.

Set against the Melbourne skyline, the night showcased the strength and resilience of the industry across retail, trade, manufacturing, safety and supply. Hosted by NTHA CEO David Little and 3AW broadcaster Darren James, the evening delivered energy, humour and well-earned recognition for outstanding achievement.
