Two thirteen-year old-girls meet beside the pinball machines at Bondi’s Hakoah Club in 1989 and begin exchanging letters between Sydney and Melbourne. Through adolescence, heartbreak and exploring their Jewish identities, the pair uncover a deep kindred bond.

Performed as a live dramatic reading, Dear Jessy, Dear Miriam imagines the friendship Jessica Chapnik Kahn and Miriam Hechtman might have shared had they met as teenagers, decades before encountering each other as adults. Funny, tender and sharply observed, the work traces parallel lives, devoted friendship and the curious timing of connection.

This performance will no doubt bring back many memories for those of us who spent our childhoods at Hakoah, including summer Maccabi Carnival discos with our interstate billets.

Some trees carry more than branches. They carry memory, resilience and hope.

At our topping out ceremony, a Norfolk Pine was planted at the future home of Hakoah, Paddington.

The tree holds deep significance for our community. It is the same species as the Norfolk Pines that stand along the Bondi foreshore - trees that became silent witnesses to unimaginable loss and heartbreak.

By planting this tree at Hakoah, we honour those whose lives were taken, we stand together in remembrance and we make a commitment to the future.

As its roots take hold and its branches grow, so too will our community. Stronger. More connected. Deeply united.

This tree is a living symbol of resilience, renewal and continuity, a reminder that while hatred seeks to diminish us, we will continue to grow, to gather, to celebrate our culture and to build a vibrant future together.

May this tree stand for generations as a symbol of strength, remembrance and hope 💙

Big things are happening at White City. 💙

Every week, the vision for the new Hakoah becomes more real — cranes in the sky, concrete pouring, courts taking shape and a future home for our community rising level by level.

This is more than a construction project. It’s the rebuilding of a hub - a place for sport, culture, wellness, celebration, connection and community!

From football fields and basketball courts to pools, fitness, arts, events and shared moments together — the Hakoah Club is being built for generations to come.

Hakoah was not just built — it was rebuilt. By Holocaust survivors who arrived with unimaginable loss, yet chose life. Chose community. Chose to gather, to play sport, to laugh again, and to create something bigger than themselves.

Their resilience wasn’t quiet — it was powerful. A refusal to be defined by what was taken, and a determination to build a future filled with connection, culture, and pride.

As we reflect on history, we’re reminded of moments when the world failed to stand up.

The 1936 Berlin Olympics gave legitimacy to the N**i regime — a global stage that masked hatred, persecution, and the stripping away of basic human rights. Despite growing awareness, the world largely chose participation over protest.

And yet — there were voices who stood up. Athletes, leaders, and communities who called for boycotts. Who understood that silence, or neutrality, can become complicity.

That lesson still echoes today. Because Hakoah represents the opposite of silence. It represents courage, community and continuity. It represents survivors who didn’t just endure history — they shaped the future.

This Yom Hashoah - we honour their spirit, we celebrate their zest for life and at Hakoah, we carry their legacy forward — together.
