Gunawirra aims to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander mothers, carers, children, families and communities to break the cycle of hardship.

Gunawirra is a community-led organisation supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families through culturally grounded early intervention programs that promote healing, resilience and connection to culture. Our programs focus on healing intergenerational trauma, trauma and grief through the influence of cultural identity, knowledge, and creativity. Our programs also use professional clini

cal care, treatment and support to improve lifestyle, health and education. At Gunawirra, we are aware how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have been cut off from access to aspects of their culture that might have helped them to heal from trauma. Gunawirra is predicated on two gifts from ancient Aboriginal peoples: The Dreaming and Healing Circles. We combine symbolic psychoanalytic thinking and other western therapeutic methods, with the ancient form of the The Dreaming and Healing Circle to help restore the internal world for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander mothers and children. From The Dreaming and Healing Circles we gain ideas of how trauma was treated and the roots of how we treat trauma today. The animating spirit of all Gunawirra projects is creating a space in which to listen, a space where the voices of traumatised children, parents and teachers can be heard, in a way that gives those voices relevance.

Today’s YAMP was one of our favourites🤎

Our little Gurung were so excited to have the Cheeky Emus visit! We started with traditional dancing and singing in language, followed by learning to play traditional musical instruments.

Then we took an imaginary trip to Brewarrina, playing ‘Look and See’ as we spotted bush animals and named them in language 🦘🐨

We even found a quiet moment to gather around a coolamon, make ochre and paint each other’s faces - It was enchanting to watch how quickly the little ones took to it.

A beautiful reminder of how our YAMP mums are raising strong, proud little Gurung through culture, connection, play and learning 🖤💛❤️

Last week, our Westmead and Rozelle mums and bubs went for an adventure at Sydney Zoo 🖤💛❤️

We would like to say a big thank you to Phoebe house for the bus and Sydney Zoo 🦁 for providing our mums and bubs with this amazing opportunity!!!

Our little ones loved seeing all the animals at the zoo. But the crocodile, snakes and camels were surprisingly a crowd favourite by all! 🐍 🐊 🐪

Our Five Big ideas care packs have been dropped off and are ready for our little ones to enjoy! ✨🎒

From everyday essentials to resources that encourage healthy routines, each pack is a little extra support to help our children feel happy, confident and ready to learn.

We’re so thankful for the generous donations and support that help make these care packs possible. Together, we’re supporting our little ones grow and prepare for big school.

Happy National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day! 🖤💛❤️

Today we celebrated with plenty of creativity, laughter and fun. Our little ones spent the day drawing, making clay creations and letting their imaginations run wild.

This year’s theme, Living Our Truth, reminds us to celebrate the voices, stories and cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, and to create spaces where they feel proud, strong and connected.

Today at Gunawirra, we were delighted to shine a spotlight on our Five Big Ideas Program alongside our generous partner, L'Oréal Groupe Australia & New Zealand

A wonderful group of volunteers joined us to learn more about the impact of the program and lend a helping hand packing care packs and essential supplies for our priority preschools and communities.

Their support helps ensure children and families have access to the everyday items they need to thrive, while fostering healthy habits and school readiness. We are incredibly grateful for their time, enthusiasm and commitment to making a positive difference.

This National Reconciliation Week, the theme “All In” reminds us that reconciliation is everyone’s responsibility.

At Gunawirra, we see every day the power of showing up for community, culture and connection. Being “All In” means listening deeply, walking alongside one another and creating spaces where Aboriginal children, women and families feel safe, strong and supported.

Reconciliation is not a passive journey. It asks all of us to learn, reflect, speak up and take meaningful action… not just this week, but every day! ✊🏽

National Sorry Day is a time to pause, reflect and acknowledge the pain and ongoing impacts experienced by the Stolen Generations, while also honouring the strength, resilience and love carried by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and communities.

At Gunawirra, this day holds deep meaning. It reminds us why connection to culture, community and identity matters so much in the work we do every day with our little ones and families. Today we stand in reflection, remembrance and hope for future generations. 🖤💛❤️
