Gunawirra

Gunawirra Gunawirra aims to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander mothers, carers, children, families and communities to break the cycle of hardship.

Gunawirra is a community-led organisation supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families through culturally grounded early intervention programs that promote healing, resilience and connection to culture. Our programs focus on healing intergenerational trauma, trauma and grief through the influence of cultural identity, knowledge, and creativity. Our programs also use professional clini

cal care, treatment and support to improve lifestyle, health and education. At Gunawirra, we are aware how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have been cut off from access to aspects of their culture that might have helped them to heal from trauma. Gunawirra is predicated on two gifts from ancient Aboriginal peoples: The Dreaming and Healing Circles. We combine symbolic psychoanalytic thinking and other western therapeutic methods, with the ancient form of the The Dreaming and Healing Circle to help restore the internal world for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander mothers and children. From The Dreaming and Healing Circles we gain ideas of how trauma was treated and the roots of how we treat trauma today. The animating spirit of all Gunawirra projects is creating a space in which to listen, a space where the voices of traumatised children, parents and teachers can be heard, in a way that gives those voices relevance.

It’s that time of year again! 🖤💛❤️

As part of our 5 Big Ideas Program, we’re seeking donations to help us put together care packs for the many children we support.

This year, we’re looking for new, unused items including:
🎒 Children’s backpacks
🪥 Toothbrushes
🦷 Toothpaste
👕 Underwear
🩹 Bandaids
👒 wide brimmed hats

These simple but essential items help encourage healthy habits, self-care, and confidence, while supporting children to feel prepared and ready for big school. Each year we ship off over 1300 care packs! So we need your support!

If you’re able to contribute, every donation helps us make a positive difference in the lives of Aboriginal children across NSW 🩵

This National Reconciliation Week, the theme “All In” reminds us that reconciliation is everyone’s responsibility.

At Gunawirra, we see every day the power of showing up for community, culture and connection. Being “All In” means listening deeply, walking alongside one another and creating spaces where Aboriginal children, women and families feel safe, strong and supported.

Reconciliation is not a passive journey. It asks all of us to learn, reflect, speak up and take meaningful action… not just this week, but every day! ✊🏽

Together, we can help build a future grounded in respect, truth-telling and shared responsibility.

🖤💛❤️

National Sorry Day is a time to pause, reflect and acknowledge the pain and ongoing impacts experienced by the Stolen Generations, while also honouring the strength, resilience and love carried by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and communities.

At Gunawirra, this day holds deep meaning. It reminds us why connection to culture, community and identity matters so much in the work we do every day with our little ones and families. Today we stand in reflection, remembrance and hope for future generations. 🖤💛❤️

Bringing variety to our activities at YAMP 2026 sometimes means things get a little messy … and our very own Art Therapist Marianne embraces the mess beautifully 🎨✨

Today’s sensory play invited the little ones to dive into silky slime, exploring new textures, sensations and the joy of trying something different. 🫟

The Aboriginal flag coloured rice was, once again, a crowd favourite🖤💛❤️ Little hands were busy scooping, pouring, measuring and searching for hidden treasures throughout the rice.

Our third station transformed into a sandy landscape filled with creatures and greenery, encouraging storytelling, imagination and creative play.🦖

No matter how many babies a mum has had, each pregnancy and birth feels different. One of our YAMP mums recently had her third baby and felt unsure and nervous about breastfeeding again. The mum needed some additional support from the team. 👩🏽‍🍼

Thanks to generous donations from , and we were able to provide the mum with formula, bottles, nappies, dummies, and other baby essentials. This helped take some pressure off. ✨

At YAMP, we don’t judge mums - we support them where they’re at, walk alongside them, and make sure they know they’re not alone. 🤍
