Bach’s Goldberg Variations
2pm
“Elizabeth Anderson’s Goldberg variations are an event. Like a knowledgeable, enthusiastic guide, she lovingly shepherds the listener across the huge musical canvas. After 50 minutes of engrossing music, it’s hard to come back to earth”. Tony Way, The Age
Bach’s Goldberg Variations are often heard today on the piano. But Bach intended them for a harpsichord with two keyboards. Elizabeth explains “What’s exciting about seeing it performed live on the right instrument is the way each of the player’s hands has its own keyboard, using the full range of notes from lowest to highest, producing some extreme hand-crossing. In movements specified by Bach ‘for two keyboards’, you’ll hear duets for one player, utilizing the different tone qualities of the two keyboards.”
A Baroque Family Songbook
8pm
Jacob Lawrence – Tenor
Elizabeth Anderson – Harpsichord
Some families gather around the barbie, others around the telly. For Jacob Lawrence, with parents Douglas Lawrence and Elizabeth Anderson, the organ or harpsichord was often at the centre. Switzerland-based tenor, Jacob returns to Australia and, alongside his mother, Elizabeth Anderson, shares some of the songs that filled their Melbourne home in the early 2000s.
