Congratulations to the Mildura Greek Elderly Citizens Club Inc. on the remarkable milestone of celebrating its 30th Anniversary.

Over decades, the Greek community has helped shape the multicultural story of Sunraysia. As one of the founding communities that supported the establishment of SMECC in 1979, your leadership, advocacy and commitment to community have left a lasting legacy that continues to enrich our region today.

On behalf of SMECC, we congratulate all past and present committee members, volunteers and members whose dedication has ensured the Club remains a vibrant and valued part of our community.

Following a successful Annual General Meeting, we are proud to introduce the Sunraysia Mallee Ethnic Communities Council (SMECC) Board for 2026–2027.

We extend our sincere thanks to everyone who attended our AGM and helped make the evening such a memorable occasion. Your presence and ongoing commitment to our diverse community across our region is greatly valued and appreciated.

We would like to acknowledge and thank our outgoing President, Dr. Ian Japp for his outstanding leadership and dedication. Having served on the SMECC Board since 2014, including six years as President. We are pleased that he will continue to share his experience and passion as a Board member in 2027.

We also warmly congratulate our incoming President, Charles Albanese, who joined the SMECC Board in 2022. We look forward to his leadership as we continue to build on SMECC's strong foundations and work towards an inclusive, connected, and vibrant future for our diverse communities.

Congratulations to all Board members elected for 2026–2027, Claire Kelly, John DeLuca, Bruce Myers, Jane Robinson and Monica Trehan.

A special thanks to our Multicultural Advisory Committee Ambassadors who attended, in particular Benedict Baraka (Ambassador of the Congolese community), Viliami Vea (Ambassador of the Tongan Community), Joselyne Majambere (Ambassador of the Burundi Community) and Roger Chub (Ambassador of the Cambodian Community) for sharing their culture with us all through language, music and dance.

We also thank Professor Karen Block, Head of the Migration and Health Unit, School of Population and Global Health, University of Melbourne, for delivering an insightful presentation on the research project Settling Well in Regional Australia: Experiences of People with Refugee Backgrounds, with a spotlight on Mildura.

Professor Block shared valuable findings on the settlement experiences of people from refugee backgrounds in regional Australia, highlighting both the opportunities and challenges of building a life in regional communities. Her presentation provided an important evidence-base for understanding how communities like Mildura can continue to support successful settlement, inclusion, and wellbeing.
