Last Saturday our team joined forces with the good folks from to break ground on a project very close to our hearts: planting out our new seed production garden at Bili's future nursery site!

We shared a few beautiful hours in each others company as we laid down the first plants, which will go on to be our motherstock for regenerating and reintroducing some locally extinct species back into the Port Phillip neighbourhood in the years to come.

We couldn't do this work without the tireless help of our local volunteers 🫶 if you'd like to join the team at Westgate and become a volunteer, visit our website and sign up today!

We'll be hosting more planting sessions for our new seed production garden throughout the year. Stay tuned for the next one 😇

You may know Enchylaena tomentosa, the Barrier Saltbush, but did you know all the different colours of berry this plant could produce?

Enchylaena is an awesome little groundcovering shrub found all across Melbourne, and is a favoured species for planting in difficult, rocky and sun-exposed positions.

Its plentiful berries are favoured by birds, mammals and reptiles, and as a local bushfood it is also a great plant for edible gardens!

From January to May our team are out in the field collecting berries, and this season has been a bumper year so we will have loads of Barrier Saltbush available for your home gardening or revegetation project 🫶

Last week we had the pleasure of hosting 12 keen students from Melbourne Polytechnic's Arboriculture department for a morning session in the trees at Westgate Park.

The students got a chance to practice their rope technique on our mature gums, and gave our habitat nest boxes some TLC 🪶

Lead by teachers Jono Summers and Ross Kite, the students were able to make some repairs to our Powerful Owl nest box 🦉 as well as removal and replacement of some microbat boxes, wood duck boxes, and the addition of two new Musk Lorikeet nest boxes 🎉

Can't wait to see the results!! If you'd like to join our volunteer crew at the monthly bird or microbat nest monitoring surveys, visit our website for registration 😌

Meet Melbourne's new floral emblem - the Swamp Everlasting 💛💛💛

This stunner of a paper daisy has been voted #1 in the floral emblem competition, and our team are hard at work propagating so that we can offer our lovely locals a steady supply of this fabulous wildflower.

The Swamp Everlasting (Swampy if you're nasty) is a rhizomatous perennial herb which was once widespread across greater Melbourne. Due to habitat destruction this species has become critically endangered in Victoria, only surviving in around 20 locations in the wild, but through the tireless efforts of our volunteer team we are thrilled to offer Xerochrysum palustre available to sell to the public!

This species loves heavy clay and waterlogged soil in full sun positions, so if you've got a wet spot in your garden, this one's for you!

We will have Swampy tube stock available for sale at next weekend's Insects of Melbourne launch at .square with .boorndap, and we're accepting orders large and small for Xerochrysum palustre, with the next batch available in early Autumn.

This work wouldn't be possible without the help of providing propagation material through their Raising Rarity program.

Join us this Friday for our first seed cleaning working bee of 2026 🥳

We will be hosting weekly seed cleaning sessions 10am to 2pm every Friday from now until the end of March, and we're looking for a few good locals to join us and get lost in the joy of seed sorting.

We'll be working through a different selection of species each week, including wildflowers, grasses, wattles, banksias, gums, aquatic plants and so much more!

If you'd like to join in for a session, RSVP via insta DM and we'll save you a seat at the table 🥰
