The massive impact of our Georges River project in Sydney 👇🏼

Over the past 12 months, our City Safari project along the Georges River has:

• removed 21.1 hectares of woody weeds

• collected 350kg of plastic litter before it could reach Botany Bay

• helped restore habitat for koalas and platypus

• brought together 241 volunteers across 20 events (that’s 939 hours on Country and for this river)

And we’re not done yet: 30,000 native seedlings are ready to go in the ground soon, thanks to the National Trust of Australia’s erosion-control works. Watch this space. 🌿

Bird flu may have slipped out of the headlines, but it hasn’t gone away.
The latest data shows Australia has recorded 484 cases across six states.

H5 bird flu has now reached Sydney, with a greater crested tern found on the Northern Beaches among three new detections in NSW.

The threat is also looming over Macquarie Island. While the virus has not yet been detected there, the Australian Government is temporarily withdrawing all 24 expeditioners amid fears they could be exposed to mass wildlife deaths. On nearby Heard Island, H5 bird flu has already killed more than 90% of elephant seal pups in some areas.

Governments have begun vaccinating threatened birds in conservation programs, including little penguins and critically endangered orange-bellied parrots. But vaccination can protect only a limited number of animals.

Australia urgently needs a properly funded and coordinated national response that protects critical habitat, controls invasive species and prepares conservation plans for wildlife most at risk.

You can help reduce the risk:
• Keep cats contained and dogs on leads around beaches, wetlands and wildlife
• Keep pets away from sick or dead animals
• Avoid feeding wild birds where possible
• Empty and clean bird baths daily
• Never touch a sick or dead animal
• Record photos or videos from a safe distance
• Report sightings to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888

The news cycle may have moved on. Australia’s wildlife cannot.
