Meet John, one of the wonderful volunteers helping care for Panboola.

John was involved in the very early days of Panboola (many years ago), and we're so pleased to have him back, generously sharing his time, skills and knowledge with our Thursday volunteer crew.

Being in front of the camera definitely wasn't part of the job description, so we're incredibly grateful to John and the other volunteers who've shared their experiences with our community.

📸 Calling all amateur photographers, nature lovers and happy snappers!

Young, old, and every age in between, we want to see Panboola through your eyes.

We know plenty of you visit with a phone or camera in hand, capturing the wildlife, landscapes and the little moments that catch your eye along the way. That's why we're launching our Photo of the Month, featuring photos taken by our wonderful community right here on our social media pages.

Whether it's a cool bird sighting, a misty morning, a curious frog, a beautiful sunset, or a moment that made you stop and appreciate the wetlands all the more, we'd want to see it.

There’s never a dull moment at Panboola. If it’s not the ever-changing landscape or the wildlife that calls this place home, it’s the ongoing conservation work being carried out by our dedicated volunteers.

This is a mid-year snapshot of what’s been happening across the wetlands in 2026 so far, the results of work undertaken many years ago and some a little look at what’s growing in the Panboola nursery.

If you’d like to play a part in protecting and restoring Panboola, a financial contribution of any amount helps ensure this important work continues on, alternatively you can become a Friend of Panboola for just $10 annually or become a volunteer!

An exciting moment that will become part of Pambula's ecological history, and one that bought a lot of joy to Alexandra.

For the past 130 years, the landscape within the Old Pambula Racecourse has been stuck between extremes, alternating between too wet and too dry, too fresh and too salty. This was not a healthy environment for the landscape.

By restoring a natural tidal connection to sections of the floodplain, we're improving water quality, creating better habitat for fish and wildlife, and supporting the long-term health of this coastal ecosystem.

The changes won't happen overnight, but that's part of the beauty of restoration. Over the months and years ahead, we'll have the privilege of watching nature respond as tidal flow returns to a landscape that has been waiting a very long time.

The first king tides are on their way since tidal flow was restored to the Old Pambula Racecourse, and if you're brave enough to venture down on a crisp June evening, you'll be witness to a very special moment.

From June 14th –17th, the first of three 2-metre tides is expected around 7:30pm on the Sunday.

Even more exciting is what's happening beneath the surface. Little fish are already finding their way into these newly reconnected waterways, exactly as nature intended.

If you're lucky enough to capture some photos, particularly of our newest aquatic visitors, we'd love to see them. Make sure you tag so we can share the excitement.

It's not every day you get to witness a piece of Pambula's environmental history unfolding before your eyes.

Have you spotted a bird that appears to be frozen in the sky above Panboola? It's not your imagination!

You've just spotted the Black-shouldered Kite, and it has one of the most impressive hunting techniques of any Australian bird species, hovering almost perfectly still while it searches the grass below for mice and other small prey.

By working with the wind, it can keep its head incredibly steady, patiently watching and waiting before suddenly diving with talons outstretched.

It's one of the many reasons that make slowing down at Panboola so worthwhile. The longer you linger, the more you notice, and the deeper you appreciate this special place.

The planting team hard at work on one of our Living Seed Bank plots🌱

A living seed bank is exactly what it sounds like: a carefully established collection of native plants that helps safeguard genetic diversity, provides a reliable local seed supply, and builds resilience for the future. Think of it as an environmental insurance policy against biodiversity loss and species extinction.

Our wonderful Panboola volunteers play a hands-on role in planting, caring for and harvesting seed from these plots, ensuring locally adapted species can continue to thrive for generations to come.

Just some of the species growing in this plot include:
🌱Coastal Grey Box (Eucalyptus bosistoana)
🌱 Blue Box (Eucalyptus baueriana)
🌱 Dwarf Bottlebrush (Callistemon subulatus)
🌱 Rough-barked Honey-myrtle (Melaleuca parvistaminea)

Winter is beginning to settle over Panboola, bringing with it subtle changes across the wetlands.

While the cooler months can seem quieter at first glance, it's actually a wonderful time to slow down and notice the details. A different bird call, mist hanging low over the wetlands, or signs of wildlife going about their daily business.

Next time you visit, keep an eye out for:
❄️ High tides (15th + 16th) that are critical for flushing the system and bringing back native fish & crabs.
❄️ An influx of wetland birds with larger social flocks such as ducks, herons, and black cockatoos.
❄️ Crisp mornings with atmospheric fog and frosts, creating a dreamlike landscape for walkers, nature lovers and photographers.
❄️ Birds of prey actively hunting like black-shouldered kites.

One of the joys of spending time in nature is seeing how the landscape shifts and responds with each passing season.
