As a former cadet of the Australian Air League, Archie has always carried a deep and genuine passion for aviation—from learning the mechanics of flight to watching aircraft take to the skies.

Today, Archie is confronting his toughest challenge yet: Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), a rare and incurable childhood brain cancer that affects around 20 Australian children every year.

Throughout his diagnosis and treatment, Archie has shown remarkable courage, resilience, and dignity. While his health prevents him from attending Air League, his love for aviation remains unbroken. His strength and optimism are an inspiration to us all, and we stand beside him and his family in lasting friendship.

A GoFundMe campaign has been created to support Archie and his family, helping ensure they can focus on precious time together and create unforgettable memories, including special aviation experiences for Archie.

Recently the cadets and officers of Niddrie and Macedon Ranges Squadrons in Victoria had the opportunity to visit the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) at their Essendon base.

For most of the cadets, this was their first time visiting the RFDS, and it gave them a chance to see a completely different side of aviation and the many careers that are available in aviation.

A huge thank you to Naylor and Chris and the RFDS for taking the time to show the cadets around, answer all of their questions and give them such an interesting behind-the-scenes look at the RFDS.

Throwback Thursday!

After our recent visit to the 1930s, we come back to the 21st century with the Australian Air League Review 2006 held at Canberra. Following a day of competition the cadets and Officers returned for a commemorative service at the Bomber Command Memorial at the Australian War Memorial.

Hard to believe it's now 20 years ago!

Restoring 1937: Lord Gowrie and the Australian Air League

A fascinating glimpse into Australia’s youth aviation history has been brought back to life. Originally published in the Daily Telegraph on 13 December 1937 , this historic photograph captured Lord Gowrie, then Governor-General of Australia, inspecting Australian Air League cadets outside Sydney's St. Andrew’s Cathedral.

For decades, the image survived only as a degraded newspaper clipping obscured by heavy printing grain. A recent digital restoration effort rescued its finer details by removing the halftone grain and sharpening the original faces without fabricating new elements.
The newspaper borders were trimmed away, and the image was colorised based on documented historical specifications for 1930s Air League uniforms. The result is a striking window into the past.

What are your thoughts on this final restored photograph? How do you view the delicate balance between using modern AI tools to clarify historical archives while maintaining strict historical authenticity? We would love to hear your perspectives in the comments below.
