The magical mid-winter light in the Stick Shed is in full bloom at the moment. If you'd like to come and see it for yourself ...read on. These photos were taken tonight (tues) but it this only happens when it's not cloudy... and it has been very cloudy lately. If you'd like to come and see this evolving light show in person, please give us a thumbs up in the comments. If there's enough interest and we get a forecast of a run of a few clear days, we'll post here a couple of days in advance that we will be staying open until 5pm so you can come and experience this phenomenon for yourself. The best time is between about 3.30 and 4.30.

WHERE DID THE POLES COME FROM? THE MOST ASKED STICK SHED QUESTION NOW HAS AN ANSWER! With thanks to Norman Houghton the senior Historian and Jackie Zappelli at the Otways Historical Society we now know the poles in the Stick Shed came from The Otways. This quote is from Norman's research....
"I have been reading through some FCV reports at the time and came across a reference in the 1941- 1942 year that the Forrest District supplied 646 messmate poles to the Grain Elevators Board for temporary wheat stacks at Murtoa. Poles varied in length from 16 ft to 60ft. So it looks like the poles came from the east Otways rather than the west Otways."

The key words are "Grains Elevator Board" because they part funded and oversaw the building of the Stick Shed with the rest of the funding coming from the Australian Wheat Board. In short state and federal funding.

What clinched it was an entry in the 1943 annual report of Forestry Commission Victoria which states "Output of pole timbers increased substantially, and large quantities were supplied to the order of the Australian Wheat Board"

The Australian Wheat Board built the number 2 shed at Murtoa and the massive storage at Dunolly.

Every indication is the same plans/designs were used for the storage part of our second shed and the Dunolly shed.

First things first the video of the Decibelles performing Amaziung Grace in the Stick Shed is up on our page. You can find them here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UJpTvnJ459Q . The mic picked up a bit of background noise but the quality of the performance shines through, nonetheless.
This week's photo has the cloud trails as the stars with either the Shed or the Sun appearing to scare the circling plane away... Icarus forewarned?

And on the third day .....DISCO!!!!! Was working through the latest timelapse videos and this bit stood out.
We'd had a couple of days of clouds and rain but then on the third day the sun was shining and you can see the difference.

THE SOUND OF THE STICK SHED. Have a listen to this. On the morning the Decibelles were set to perform in the Stick Shed, it was calm, there was no work going on anywhere on the Grain Corp site, none of our videos had been turned on and this is what the omni directional mic picked up. The volume hasn't been boosted or any other audio editing, this is just the shed talking to the shed...

Rachel Gellert played her harp in the Stick Shed after performing with the Decibelles on Heritage day.
It was truly moving but the microphone picked up what you couldn't hear "live' which was background noise about 50 metres away. Long story short there is a new directional microphone coming and we'll record Rachel without background noise....we'll post the results and the expectation is they will be spectacular. Something to look forward to.

A sure sign that winter is coming. The South Side Stick Shed afternoon light show is starting to appear.
As the days get shorter the effect builds and the colours deepen. Obviously clear winter days are best.
It would be at short notice but if there is a run of good days during winter that we could be confident would deliver the light effect would any of you be interested in coming to have a look if the Stick Shed stayed open one evening? You'd probably only get a days' notice here on Facebook that it was on. Let us know.
